I do understand the complainant's point of view to a certain extent. Our experience is that bird feeders tend to provide an easy meal for other beasts as well. In our case it was squirrels, and I didn't see why I should pay out good money to ensure the survival of the grey pests. Also, the local cats (including ours) regarded any unwary birds as small KFCs, so we gave up on the idea. So the sparrows and blue tits have colonised the eaves of our house and our compost bin has been a nice warm restaurant for rats for many a long year. So long as they don't come into the house I don't mind. The sheep was bad enough...

Quote from: Dorsetmike on May 11, 2026, 04:24:22 PMBought a small bird feeder that fixes to the window on suction pads; after three days I was 1 robin, 2 magpies and a pigeon (?small birds?). Today I get a note through the door roughly translated it says "thou shalt not fix bird feeders on thy patio" they attract rats! In 12 years here I have only seen one rat and that came indoors via the pipework.

That's because you didn't have a bird feeder.  :D
You could always get a cat (if you're allowed to) to catch any rats. We have 4 cats. Betty doesn't understand that she's not supposed to be able to get inside the bird table though:

We abandoned the bird feeder when we had a large Brown Rat climb up the trellis to get at the food.
Now just started feeding the female hedgehog who is busy taking dry leaves etc. under the cycle shed, guess she's building a nest in which to give birth to the hoglets.

We had a couple of hoglets crawl out from under the main shed about 10 years ago, guess they were orphaned. They were very young, about the size of hamsters and their eyes were still closed. We took them to a wild life rescue place at Cricklade (wilts). They were the youngest they had ever had and doubted they would survive. Must have done as they phoned several months later because they like to release them back where they were found.

Premier Inn slogan is "Good night's sleep - Guaranteed"
I couldn't get to sleep owing to a very noisy extractor fan in the bathroom. The only way to stop it was to remove my keycard from the slot by the door. After about 3 minutes all power was cut so you do have time to get back to bed. Trouble is, if you have to get up in the night (which I frequently do) you have to fumble for your card in the dark and feel your way in the pitch black to the slot. Meantime, the fan in the next door room was merrily creating a racket until they realised what to do. There was also a whirring noise all night which couldn't have been aircon as it's not warm enough.
2 and a half hours of sleep. >:(
Then when I went to breakfast the cafe was rammed and I was asked to return in half an hour.
I can't wait for the inevitable 'How did we do?' E mail

Oh yes, the switch for the bedside light is so high up you have to sit up to reach it :unimpressed:
