Friends, obscure question that might get more interesting!


What would be the N gauge scale diameter and height of cement storage silos?

Secondly how many would there be in an average depot?

Sorry Peter but at Northfleet we only deal with Cement Manufacture rather than local depot storage...

I'll have a look later on my PC as I think I have some N Gauge plans for a store facility but the long and short of it is that I do not think there is a standard...

Someone on here might be able to tell you different else find a picture on the inter web and scale it from there..  I don't think anyone will be able to tell you that it is to small or to large...

I need to go to the cave shortly, I'll take a look on my PC because I think I have more out there.  Btw there are a lot of silos for sale if you want one at 304mm to 1 foot scale...

Here's what I have on Hafaton. I cannot tell you how prototypical it is, or if it has a suitable number of silos, but it might give you some ideas.

G'day All, again. I am assuming that the originator of this thread, Peter, is planning to build a bulk cement distribution depot, i.e. rail wagons bring in bulk cement for storage and then distribution by truck, compared to a cement works where cement is created out of limestone etc and then distributed in bulk by rail. This will have some bearing on the size/type of silos being used. Fortunately the Goods & Not So Goods page covers both.

Sorry but i couldn't find the Cement works drawings I had but here are some dodgy photos of my first N Gauge Blue Circle works layout. 

The buildings were kind of makey-uppy based on pictures of various cement works.  Made of cereal boxes, painted grey, very small windows.

Distant silos were centres of toilet rolls which when resurfaced, painted and the appropriate gear put on the roof could look quite acceptable

The Choates Lane Rail Silos for Cement were taken directly from the drawings that we used to build the real rail silos for Castle Cement's site at Ketton in Rutland.











Now for the real thing













I still have the drawings of the whole site.  These include the pre-heater towers, road silos, rail silos, kiln and clinker storage.

VERY, VERY close, not washing up bottles but denture cleaning tablet tubes!

I have (6) if anyone would like to construct silos, for free!  (P&P extra!)

It was my intention to use them but I have changed my mind!  They measure (1") inch diameter x (7.1/2" LOA).

Anyone interested?

These are the arrangements at Horseblock Lane, loosely based on Bletchley's cement distribution element. (No room for the aggregates!)







The silos are made from Knightwing diesel fuel tanks with the fillers filed off and one end flattened on a large file to allow it to sit flat. Other storage tanks are from Vitamin C/Steradent tablet sized tubes and the tubes that come with Smarties lollies.
