Moonglum

#5355
I was saddened to hear today that Jon Camp, the bass player of Renaissance (Mk.2), died shortly before Xmas aged 75.

On Friday 21st February 1975, Mrs Moonglum and I went to see Caravan at Brunel University, West London. Renaissance was the support act and we were most impressed. Great musicianship and a fabulous singer in Annie Haslem, so here with the first track we heard live is Renaissance...

For reasons I won't go into we didn't get to see Caravan on this occasion but Renaissance made a deep impression and we saw them a further three times culminating with a concert in 1977 at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. We sat in the front row and enjoyed every minute of it. Annie Haslam's dress became quite see through under certain lighting conditions. Possibly the best performance we witnessed by Renaissance who were also show casing tracks from their new Novella album.

Cheers,

Tim

Renaissance are one of my top 5 bands and Annie Haslam was with them when I saw them at Leicester. Probably my favourite track is 'Ashes are burning' off the 'Live at Carnegie' double album

Moonglum

IIRC, "Ashes are Burning" was always at the end of the set/encore and climaxed with a disco ball lit by spot lights. Unfortunately, it all went down hill after the release of "A Song for all Seasons". Annie resurrected Renaissance in the USA a little while ago but at 77 she has lost her edge (IMO).

For some reason, I know not why, I never got into Renaissance apart from the original band led by Keith and Jane Relf.
Maybe I need to "discover" Renaissance version two and beyond.
I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.

@port perran
I'd recommend the double CD 'De Capo' as a sort of 'Greatest Tracks' studio album and 'Live at Carnegie Hall' for live performances (I have the double vinyl album)
Forget the commercial trash like 'Northern Lights' :unimpressed:

I used to have that but can't find it now. I think someone nicked it

It's been a horrible cold and wet day here so I've been building a chippy for the layout hence about 5 hours of listening to various albums from Renaissance.

Sorry chaps but I now realise why I never took any interest in them.
Not really my thing and I'm afraid that I find Annie Haslam's voice rather grating.

So, unfortunately although interesting it's a thumbs down from me.

Nice try though.

Here's something from way back.
A band who were well received but never made it big at all. Nevertheless a nice bluesy/jazz track :
I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.

Bealman

Never heard of them, and after hearing that, I can see why  ;)
Vision over visibility. Bono, U2.

Newportnobby

It definitely has that early 70s sampler album vibe but sadly does nowt for me

Great setting, great concert, great guitar sounds and all round great DVD
The band can be a bit hit and miss, though

I didn't really have you down as an Indy fan Mick.
There are a fair few bands of this genre that I like - Snow Patrol included.
I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.
