I've been doing the postcode lottery for a few years and after that opening statement you're probably thinking ruddy heck Fishy, you've won and you're now very very rich. Wrong. The thing is I haven't won anything on it for ages so in October I decided to cancel it and put the same money on the lottery game Set for Life instead. Wrong again, I haven't won the top prize on that one either.
However, I have since won 2 small amounts on the Set for life and last week I 'won' £12 on the postcode lottery even though it's been cancelled for weeks. I even checked to make sure my direct debit hadn't been taken which it hasn't so I have no idea why I can still log into my account, play their "B1g qu1z" which puts me in another draw and as mentioned win money too. Then to cap it all off they sent me an email at the weekend to say I had won what they call a Letterbox prize. It arrived today and would you believe it, I won 2 pairs of socks which are apparently made from cotton and seaweed as shown below! Oh, those aren't my legs or feet either, I borrowed the picture from the Forebel website. I feel so lucky and will wear these socks with pride maybe even to the gym (where I was announced as the 4th biggest 'loser' out of 24 last night) in the new year  :D
Oh yeah, here are the socks:

Oh and my class 41 arrived yesterday too so it seems I'm a winner all round once I've attacked that with an angle grinder

It's been just over 2½ years since my Mum passed away and, in amongst some papers, I found details of a great-great-uncle Alfred Lucas. He was born in 1892 and joined the Royal Navy in 1914 as an Engine Room Artificer. Posted to HMS Goliath in early 1915 he was sadly among the 570 out of a crew of 720 lost when the Goliath was torpedoed by an Ottoman destroyer in May 1915 off the Dardanelles. He was just 23, and has a plaque at the CWGC centre on Plymouth Hoe which I hope to see before I shuffle off this mortal coil

Ever since I read those notes I've been searching for a Farish 371-602A Warship D819 'Goliath' and I was so pleased this week to find one at Footplate Models in Kidderminster. It's not new but is reported as being in the original box and working fine, just missing a coupling at one end. I am due to receive it tomorrow so will test it Friday morning. I'm just so happy to have found one, even it becomes a static model.
Edit:- Model received today. As advised by Footplate Models one coupling was missing. What they didn't say was that one buffer was also missing. Still, the front end (without coupling) has both buffers so I have time to look out a spare from maybe Farish N Spares. Running it tomorrow morning.

Final edit:- Loco runs just fine in each direction with lights working as they should

As has now become customary, we shall be spending Christmas Day at Blanche's son's house. There will be 12 of us and our daughter-in-law, as is her right as hostess, has declared it will be a 'no-phones' day, which we heartily approve of. I can think of at least one person who won't be happy, but I think most people will be OK with it. The idea is that we play board games and generally talk to each other. How revolutionary!

Cheers,

Chris

I hope your daughter-in-law confiscates them on entrance or folks will be sneaking off for a surreptitious gander at the damn things

Quote from: chrism on December 17, 2024, 07:21:53 PMAll I have to do now is get another eye test at my local optician so that they can a) check for any aberrations that the clinic's tests weren't looking for and b) get a "baseline" test result so they have something to refer against should there be any changes in the future.

Yippee. The local opticians had a cancellation so they could do my post-op full eye test today - 6/5 visual acuity in both eyes, no other issues and they don't need to see me for another 2 years  :claphappy:

After a week of dreaded earlies, it was nice to be off today so following a morning swim, a walk to Chris Crafts in Plymouth to see if they had anything interesting in was in order. The memorial is more or less on the way depending which way you walk, so I went to see if I could find your great great uncle and see if I could get a photo for you of the plaque.

The engraving can be found in the block sixth from left on the side of the memorial which faces the sea (photo below) should you ever get the chance to visit. It is a fantastic memorial and well worth visiting in its own right. There are also plenty of military graves in Ford Park Cemetery in Plymouth (not too far from the station), which is also worth a look at, many of which are maintained by the CWG and kept pristine.

Wow! Thanks so much for getting those pics. I've also been mailed a snapshot of his service record and he would rival @lil chris in height as Alfred was 5ft 4in
Thanks again for taking the time/trouble.

The Imperial war museum is often a good source. So are forces war records as I've looked up my late Grandfather and his service
