Good point Mick @Newportnobby , probably many instruments we know today have developed or evolved over many years, if not centuries.

Hopefully, the Prom is available on iplayer, "The Planet Suite" is a favourite but I used think "Venus" was a bit of a let down after "Mars"; however, I have grown to love it!

Cheers,

Tim

Yeah, but the French Horn with valves to control pitch and tone was really fathered by Germans.
And who decided the only safe way to hold it was to stuff an arm up to the elbow in the horn piece? :laugh3:

Moving on... a school friend Alice Cosmic Ash (or Elayne as her parents knew her) gave me an album called "Charge" by a relatively obscure band called Paladin. It was their second album and was very mixed in content and not much of a favourite by any means. I found this track and put it on a Spotify playlist. See what you think... I wouldn't say it's bad, but I wasn't over impressed, either. Maybe a good 'sampler' track.
The album cover is, of course, by Roger Dean and features in the album I have of his works

One of my favourite 'Lizzy' tracks with the line up I saw in Bristol on their farewell tour :*(
The guitarists Scott Gorham and John Sykes matched other superbly
I always considered them to be somewhat under rated, especially in the States

Excellent choice Mick @Newportnobby , probably my favourite TL track. My brother-in-law has the live album "Live", recorded at Hammersmith Odeon during the farewell tour that you saw them in Bristol in 1983. Back in the day, I was able to rip and burn the best tracks (IMO) on to a single CD. I am not sure where the video was recorded.

Cheers,

Tim

Great track and great band. Limehouse Lizzy are a top tribute band for Thin Lizzy.

Trainfish

I didn't enjoy Limehouse Lizzy when I saw them at Minehead in 2018 but I did enjoy Black Star Riders at the same venue 3 years earlier. You probably already know but they are the reincarnation of Lizzy and included Scott Gorham, Ricky Warwick and Damon Johnson at the time. I had for some reason never seen Lizzy before, not even at Monsters of Rock but by the time I left that hall at Butlins Minehead I knew I had seen the second best thing. I don't mind admitting that the tributes to both Phil Lynott and Gary Moore brought a tear to my eye. I've also seen Snowy White a few times and I have to say he puts on a fantastic show too.
Unfortunately I now find Black Star riders a bit 'samey' though with their own stuff.

Going back to Mick's @Newportnobby post about the proms, we watched the "Planet Suite" Prom last night and what a treat it was and bravo the "lass" on tympani. Each "Planet" is fantastic.

I thought I would post this piece of music taken from "In the Wake of Poseidon" by King Crimson, the composer(s) had obviously been listening to Holst. I quite understand if you find far too chaotic...

Actually, I much prefer the track "Cat Food" that precedes it.

Interesting, and worth more than the one play I have time for at present. :hmmm:
First thoughts were how discordant it was but then the same accusation was levelled at The Beatles 'Day in the Life' all those years ago.
I'm surprised more bands haven't tapped into more classical music but maybe they'd be howled down for heresy. Certainly The Nice didn't do too badly out of it, followed closely by ELP.

I had a copy of In the Wake of Poseidon back in the day, probably finding it more innovative than brilliant although I rather liked it.
Jon Lord with his Gemini Suite album is another good example of rock musicians dipping their toes into somewhat uncharted waters and worth a listen if you get the chance.

If you like classical music though you can do no better than hop aboard one of our town circular buses which we catch home on occasion from the sea front;

I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.

I saw them live just after America was released. They closed the show with it. Keith Emerson did his trick of using knives on the Hammond.
The years have been good to me, it was the weekends that did the damage.
