Loved Palpatine's cackle at the end. My only regret is that bringing back Palpatine somehow undermines the effort that went into creating Snoke. Who was he? Where did he come from? What did he want?

Will we ever know?

Yes, sadly need to wait 8 months

edit :
Do not forget that Teaser Trailers are heavily edited, so the sequences do not match how they appear in the film

TFA there were three Teaser Trailers, and four Film Trailers

TLJ there were two Teaser Trailers, and seven Film Trailers

TROS, the first Film Trailer is due in August, with the final Film Trailer due in the first week of September

Life was so much easier in 1977.

And, of course, they're not milking it for every $ they can get

In episodes 1-3 it was more about looking out for game footage - or rather what could become a game.
Thank goodness the last two have been less obvious game sellers and more storyline based.

TFA made a vast (box office) profit
Rogue One made a small profit
Every film since then has made a loss
However, Lucasfilm / Disney have other revenue streams from the films (since 2014)

I lost all interest in the Star Wars films after I had to watch the last load of garbage otherwise known as the "the Last Jedi"

The spin off films on the other hands are brilliant.

Rogue One is ok.   I still have the blu-ray of Solo sitting next to the TV since it came out, I've put it on 3 times and still haven't managed to watch all of it through without dozing off!

Don't get me wrong. I have been an avid watcher of Star Wars films since day 1 but, really, it's getting somewhat thin now (which is more than I can say about myself :-[)

Couldn't agree more, @Newportnobby.

The original film was a perfect film in terms of craft and story. The second film was a better drama, if a less complete "hero's journey" story. It also had better special effects. In a sense I feel that was the problem here: in producing two brilliant films, subsequent films were expected.

ROTJ was workmanlike; it got the story finished in a satisfying way, and the special effects were even better. It just wasn't as good a story as the previous two, and that's been the trend ever since: each film has to justify the existence of the franchise, without actually telling a story that needs to be told.

We didn't need to know where Vader came from beyond knowing he was Luke's father and he fell into evil. We don't need to know how the Emperor rose to power, simply that he exists and rules the galaxy. We don't really need to know how Leia got the Death Star plans, only that she is being pursued and eventually gets captured by the Imperials.

I love Star Wars, and thoroughly enjoy reading all the books filled with R5D4 specifications, womp rate biology, and the history of the temples on Yavin 4. But at the end of the day, these background details work best as mysteries, and the original Star Wars film, and Empire, worked brilliantly because we simply fell into a rich history without needing everything spelled out.

I just feel that the more we're seeing in the films, the less magical it all appears. It doesn't help that after Empire, the films have been steadily less interesting in terms of characters and drama. It's not like these are love stories or psychological dramas or suspense thrillers. They're all reworking the same basic good vs. evil hero story, and after the original Star Wars, none have pulled that off in an original manner that I care about.

As an aside
I was involved in about one third of the filming of TLJ (training during the filming of Rogue One)
I made a point of attending the filming of one specific scene, and I think you know which one!
Overall, I managed to watch the filming of at least thirty scenes, and thoroughly enjoyed that
Looking back I got caught up in the emotion of that, and here is why

Disney (WDSMP) invited me to the UK Press Screening for TLJ, and I jumped at it as it meant I could see the full film a full three days before release in the UK
All they wanted to know was what the press thought of it, the debrief afterwards was interesting
It is not something I would ever do again
Firstly, I was not aware that the lights stay on throughout the screening
The observers were almost always in discussion, which was distracting
Finally, their comments were very negative

Ironically, when I went to the Premiere it was an excellent experience, but again looking back caught up on the emotion of that

I then went to a screening a few days later, and was so disappointed in the actual film, overall
Yes, bits of it worked very well
But at least of one third of it was dreadful
Compared to TFA where just one scene is dreadful (Hux speech scene)

From that I went on to be involved in the Solo movie, and that had even more issues than I can list!
The UK Premiere was bizarre
I went to a local screening a week later and there were less than 10 people, so knew at that point it had bombed

I therefore decided not to be so involved with TROS, and only attended the filming of two scenes, and I do hope I attended the correct two!

On the plus side, I have a contract for the next four Star Wars films, and from past experience will be a little more guarded about my requests...

A very interesting aside. Reminds me of the politics versus science of my job.

As a simpleton who doesn't read the books or play the games etc I knew from a very early age (1977) that the first three Star Wars films were episodes 4-6 in a 9 part triple trilogy.
I already thought that was an extravagance, but they slowly progressed to complete the set of nine, and I have enjoyed Rogue One and Solo despite what you said, from the pure escapism and enjoyment of them. I am now shocked to hear there are another four to follow.
I thought that a good screenplay ended when it was supposed to end... so where does it go from here?
Most UK writers like to go out on a high, but i guess most Disney writers want a job...

Best
Bob
