I guess there are precedents in that the Dune trilogy ended up as 6 books, whereas Game of Thrones will finish with the series 8 despite there still being two books to be written by George RR Martin.

Agreed, but Herbert evidently had plenty he wanted to say about politics, sex, the danger of looking up to heroes, and so forth. While I don't find the five sequels a patch on the originality and brilliance of 'Dune' itself, they're interesting enough books, and the last three are very different in tone. More like extended thought experiments that traditional space opera.

But I fail to see anything original in the Star Wars movies after the first one. 'Empire' is excellent, and arguably the better made film, but it's loses out in being less original than the first 'Star Wars' film. I don't just mean in terms of characters and locations, but in that the first film genuinely did something new, taking Saturday morning serial tropes, mixed them with classic hero journey ideas, and bundled them up with a gritty, realistic looking science fiction setting.

Everything else seems to be just different ways of rehashing the same old story. Underdog heroes fighting better equipped baddies; story ends with unlikely victory and something huge being blown up. It looks lovely, of course, and the depth of the universe remains its biggest selling point. But the stories themselves are so unoriginal it defies belief.

From that I went on to be involved in the Solo movie, and that had even more issues than I can list!
The UK Premiere was bizarre
I went to a local screening a week later and there were less than 10 people, so knew at that point it had bombed

Shame, I rather enjoyed Solo. Certainly much better than Rogue One or TLJ.

During my recent extended hospital stay, I got to see a lot of movies. Top health insurance got me three Foxtel movie channels, but did nothing to speed the healing process.

I started watching TLJ and the Solo movies, and switched back to network TV.

Being stuck where I was, I eventually gave them another go, but found them convoluted and basically (like so many movies these days) just a vehicle for CGI special effects.

Often these days, we're watching a cartoon with real actors superimposed on it - really just a sophisticated version of that sequence with Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins

I agree with everything that NeMo suggests. The first movie was ground breaking, and was presented as a complete storyline package. I'm fairly sure it was originally conceived as a one-off.... if it had not been the success it was, would the original two sequels have been made?

At the time of launch in 1977 it was sold as the first film in the second trilogy of three. Which at the age of 17 I thought was pretty cool.
But it was years before they took off and started filming the first trilogy. And now only recently has Marvel vs Disney wars upped the need to produce a film every season.
which is why we now get backstories and prequals everywhere.

The slight difference there though, is that Marvel have a huge volume of material to work with, with comic book characters dating back to the early 1960s.

They really don't need to invent new characters and storylines, they're already there!

20th Century Fox initially only agreed to one film, but they were aware of this in 1973

Star Wars when initially released in 1977 had no title, it was added in 1979
George Lucas had written an outline story of 9 films, and 20th Century Fox edited the film to include the title when filming for ESB commenced

I have only ever watched the films, no interest in any of the books, games, and so on
That was one of the reasons I ended up with this job!

Quote from: Bob G on April 13, 2019, 08:59:30 PMI am now shocked to hear there are another four to follow.
so where does it go from here?
i guess most Disney writers want a job...
Details of the final film of six were outlined in 2014
The next set of Trilogy films was outlined in 2017

Production started in October last year, and principal photography is about to start on the next and final (standalone) film
Parallel to this is the next set of Trilogy films, the first of which will be filming at the same time

There are numerous sets of film writers
Lucasfilm (Star Wars films) have a set of about a dozen writers, and they write an outline story
The Director can then decided which, if any, parts of that story to include, and it then goes back to Lucasfilm for consideration
Even during filming and editing this process continues
As an example during the filming of TFA not much of the original story made it through to the final film, and was re-written 88 times (including two re-writes for continuity into TLJ)
Personally, that is where TLJ failed, as none of the original story was used, Rian Johnson convinced Lucasfilm of a new storyline which would not require any re-shoots

Then after all that, the film goes from Lucasfilm to Disney for consideration
This where is the filming of Rogue One went wrong, as Disney returned feedback asking why all the main characters survived, but none of them are in any of the other films
The point that had been missed was Lucasfilm thought it was insensitive to kill them off, so the reshoots included killing them all off!

Only version of star wars i like is the 3 minute  version by Maclean & Maclean, i wont post it,or a link as it contains 1 or 2 naughty words, but it sums up the first film in 3 minutes.

be interesting to know what the standalone film is
It would appear Erin Kellyman (Enfys Nest from the Solo film) has accidentally leaked some details
Basically she appears in the next film
