I joined Facebook after my grandchildren badgered me to join. I now get regular updates, with photos, of their Friday nights out - usually skimpy outfits and loads of booze on show (their over 21, just, so you get the idea!).  ::) However, I have also made contact with a number of ex-pupils from my old schools and work places, who I had lost touch with. The only info on my Facebook page is already in the public domain, somewhere, and in two years I have had no problems.

Gawd, there's one good reason not to join from my perspective!  ::)

Absolutely HATED school, everything to do with it, and 99.9% of the people I unfortunately came into contact with. Certainly would not want to contact any of them again, and would rather they didn't know what I was up to either  ;)

Well, certainly some of the girls haven't aged too well (a few lucky escapes there), but I don't expect I have either!

Being in a job where data protection and security are very important, let's just say I have serious professional concerns about some of the tricks they get up to...

It's not just the information you actually 'give' them by entering on their pages; they have been caught out a few times 'collecting' other information you enter in other websites. Just as an example if you have BaseFook open in another browser window/tab now, it is quite likely they 'helpfully' have your NGF login/password on file...

Especially watch for 'like this'/'share this' links in other web pages. If the author of that page has not been careful and has used the chunk of code FarceBook provide as is, it will have tried to drop their cookie onto your PC and will be tracking your browsing now... (the links from NGF are 'clean' BTW or I wouldn't be here typing this now...)

Yes... Google are another very much "on the naughty step" at the moment...

Very strong recomendation is to block all third party cookies - that is cookies from sites other than the specific one you are viewing, in the browser security settings (easy in in all browsers except Google Chrome which is do-able but more awkward) and set to prompt for first party cookies i.e. the actual site you are browsing, then when prompted think does this site need to store/collect my information? some do such as forums and shopping sites to hold session login status, and for example the BBC site for regional settings for regional news, weather etc but some others are extremely dubious...

Also make sure you have good anti virus, keep it up todate and run the maintenance apps regularly..

Only by some of  the more misinformed and clueless media types.

Whose browser was it that got the security wrong and so stored the cookies wrongly ? Not Google's, in fact Chrome and Firefox didn't have a problem.

I am shocked at how eager people are to make their private and personal details public...

I was an avid FBer then discovered pictures I thought were only visible to friends were actually being shown in a 123people... Needless to say I deleted everything then deactivated my account...

I read in the Sunday Times that Apple were on the back foot recently as some social media apps (not FB) were caught out harvesting user's contacts details... Not sure how much info was being harvested but I know I store birthdays for some of my phone contacts... Not sure they would be too happy if their details fell in to the wrong hands... Fortunately I don't use any social networks nor do I own an iPhone...

No. In this case, suggesting Google are Inocent is like saying the thief who conned his way into your house using false ID is inocent and it was all the fault of the maker of the door you opened for the thief...

I would suggest you read through the technical analysis.  See WebKit bugzilla #35824.

Google did nothing underhand here, bugs in some of the WebKit based browsers meant that the browser wrongly stored various cookies it shouldn't have.

Firefox and properly behaving browsers asked you about the cookie, or if third party cookies were entirely disabled simply chucked it.
