Some favourite old Genesis songs (not the pop rubbish they churned out later)

I also really hope the Beeb broadcasts this event...........

Unquestionably the greatest band that I never saw live although I am intensely jealous that Mrs PP saw them in the early 1970s well before I knew her.

Santana were, to a 16/17 year old me, a revelation when I first heard  them. I was blown away by what was a new sound.

Here they are from 1970 with a blur of percussion beat, intense keyboards and, of course, sublime guitar skills.
Also included is the customary 1970s drum solo from Michael Shrieve who was only about 19 years old when this was filmed.
What a fabulous drummer he was.

Anyway, here is Soul Sacrifice.

Enjoy.

Train Waiting

Woody, our woodpecker*, up in the old oak tree.

*Great spotted, Dendrocopos major. Great drummers, but no long hair.

With all good wishes.

The Table-Top Railway is an attempt to create, in British 'N' gauge,  a 'semi-scenic' railway in the old-fashioned style, reminiscent of the layouts of the 1930s to the 1950s.

Fab Martin @port perran ... a school chum introduced me to Santana, probably "Abraxas"  but it wasn't until I heard "Caravanserai" that I became hooked and had their albums up to "Marathon". MS's drum solo is on a small kit compared to what we have nowadays.

Here is a more recent example of drum solos...

Did you hear the John Bonham bit?

Do you mean the Moby Dick soundalike bit?

As for the drum solo itself - not up to the Michael Shrieve standard to my mind.
More playing to the crowd rather than mastery of his drumkit.

Mike Mangini (ex Dream Theater) as seen above does hold the World Record as the fastest drummer in the category Bare Hand Single Stroke Roll: Mike Mangini - [18.96 strokes a second] 1138 Strokes in 60 seconds - Bare Hand Speed . On the other hand John's ( @Train Waiting ) "Woody" woodpecker's far Eastern cousin, the Japanese pygmy woodpecker's drumming can exceed 38 beats per second.

Martin @port perran , to be honest I find drum solo's a bit tedious and self indulgent. They work better when integrated into a track such as Steve Gadd's contribution to Steely Dan's "Aja" - especially on the outro.

Having seen Buddy Rich in Bletchley with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra I would consider him the best drummer. Such a shame the much vaunted drum battle between him and Ginger Baker never happened

But the drum battle with Animal from the Muppets did  :D

Saw him at the Ronny Scots club with his orchestra c1976, brilliant.
