Martin @port perran , true story, in my latter days at Network Rail (circa 2011) I was in the office at Waterloo Station when one of the younger commercial manager's mobile rang, the ring tone was Frank Zappa's "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" from his album "Apostrophe". I surprised the CM by knowing the tune, he asked me if I knew anything by "Porcupine Tree" (Steve Wilson's band). I said no and he ripped and burnt me a copy of "The Incident" which I still have; so, in answer to your question, I am not totally obsessed but from that introduction I do like his output. Here from that album is "Time Flies" (bit Floydy)...

Quote from: Moonglum on May 29, 2025, 04:09:44 PMI must admit that I initially misread @kusojiji 's post thinking it said Blackfield (another Steven Wilson collaboration for you Martin @port perran !)

Anyway, Outfield is not really my thing so here is some Blackfield from 2007...

There is of course Leftfield...

Tim

Wow, dark sound, but sounds good!

Newportnobby

@Moonglum Tim, thanks.
I'd never heard of 'Blackfield' before ( :dunce: ) so I downloaded 'Epidemic' and 3 other tracks as I like them so much

 :thankyousign:

Moonglum

Thanks Mick @Newportnobby , I have to admit that's the first time that I had heard them as well! Not bad at all, Steven Wilson's work is very eclectic!

@kusojiji , obviously I remember "Don't Fear the Reaper" but that's it for BOC. This is a new one on me so I looked it up. The lyrics I assume are by Michael Moorcock*, a science fiction/fantasy writer that was also very much involved with Hawkwind ("The Chronicles of the Black Sword" for example). Most interesting thank you - the track's not bad either.

Tim

*I read a lot of his books as a teenager!

port perran

As per @Moonglum I know little of BOC apart from, as Tim suggests, the obvious Reaper.

That track isn't really my cuppa but not bad. Reminds me a bit of Black Widow  who I saw a couple of times in the early 70s.

And @Moonglum , I rather like Time Flies by Porcupine Tree. Good stuff.
I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.

kusojiji

It is one of the soundtracks on Heavy Metal.

port perran

I'm not sure whether we've mentioned Quintessence on here before.

I saw them in around 1970 and remember very little of it so they probably didn't make a lasting impression.

Those who bought the Island Records Bumper sampler will remember this :
I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.

Moonglum

A bit of an acquired taste required for that one Martin @port perran . I remember their track "Gange Mai" from "Nice Enough to Eat" better! A sort of cross breed of Jethro Tull, Hawkwind and anything you can think of... What a sampler though, from King Crimson to Nick Drake.

Here is the Steven Wilson remix of "We Used to Know" by Jethro Tull from NETE. I quite liked early JT.

Newportnobby

As you may have surmised from my previous blatherings, I have both the samplers mentioned and that Jethro Tull track is one of my favourites with some great guitar
Thanks, Both

That put me straight onto Mott the Hoople. A great R & B band before Bowie turned them into pop stars.
Here's 'At the crossroads' from NETE

and 'Thunderbuck Ram' from Bumpers

and here's another great band @Chris Morris

I only knew them from all the young dudes. What a completely different sound.

I brought all those Island samplers back to Oz in 1990, but unfortunately the only one I've been able to find in recent years is Nice enough to eat. Stuffed if I know wots happened to the others  >:(
