Hi All,

I just feel I need to vent a little if thats ok.

So 9 years ago (its been that long!) I did a youtube video reviewing the Morley Vortrak controller as I really liked it and thought some people find it useful.  I had music under my voice (I was new to this sort of thing) and while I get (now anyway) that some people don't like that, I wasn't expecting this rude comment this morningI

I just wanted to say

Where the ****** do people get off with this kind of rudeness?

People create content for free, sometimes to help, sometimes to share and (given by what I've seen with most model railway videos anyway) mostly to spread a bit of joy.

Aren't people taught about good manners anymore or does that all go out of the window when comments are online?  (I know they do.. this is just a rant!!)

Sorry to vent..

But I understand why people just stop creating content, if you don't like it don't watch but keep your mouth shut

Thing is, I don't immediately read that as rude.  A little brusque yes, but I think trying to make a helpful suggestion.  I also find music on some videos etc. irritating and mostly unnecessary, often too loud compared to the narration etc.

I know little of this online world of the 'socials' (I think that is this week's term!) but can I please gently ask you to think about one thing you wrote:

I have no idea how many people get paid, in one way or another, for what they produce, but it's not all created free.  Which might make certain non-discerning individuals (how's that for euphemism?!) leap to the erroneous conclusion that everyone is getting paid.  And react accordingly.  If payment is fully disclosed - fine, but I fear that is not always the case. 

Then, of course, some people are just not very nice!

I have had two 'thumbs downs' since I joined our FantasticForum and I think a lot - far, far too much I suppose - about them.  I think one might have been a mistake - wrong button, so easy to do!  But, here's the thing - why do I think of these almost as much as I think of all the lovely positive feedback (and lovely, kind posts) that people leave?

In conclusion - please treat this on-line rudeness as you would in real life and simply ignore it.  You'll feel better that way.  And... please post another video of Aberffilli!

Sadly, it goes with the territory that if you post something online, even a simple post on a forum like this, there may always be someone who will post something back that you don't want to hear.  That may not necessarily be meant as derogatory but perhaps just someone with a different point of view. I agree with @ntpntpntp that this person probably felt they were being constructive and wouldn't have wished to upset you.  No matter how hard we all try to phrase things appropriately sometimes inadvertently what we say can be taken by someone else in a way we didn't intend.  Don't take it personally, I'm sure there are hundreds more people who have watched your video and found it to be helpful.  Keep on doing what you if you enjoy doing it and there will always be people out there who are appreciative, even if they don't always say so.

For what it's worth I tend to agree with the above comments, but wonder if people are happy to respond online in a way they wouldn't dream of doing in person?

Just ignore it, but, If it makes you feel better, you can always "dislike" the comment.

Don't forget on YouTube you can delete the comment

Frequently people don't understand what they have written and don't fully check what they have written, punctuation in the wrong place or not at all can give a different meaning to the written word. We are all guilty.

A review is, by nature, your opinion of something and therefore anyone is within their right to express their opinion of your review. I find the issue is any opinion, to my mind, should be polite rather than blunt but sadly some do not think whether they're upsetting someone else but just plough on in the belief their opinion carries more weight. All opinions are valid but are open to disagreement.

I think it's a combination of all of the above; people attempting to be constructive, but doing so in a brusque way, the loss of nuance in the written word, the anonymity and ease of posting online.

3 years ago (I've just checked!) I made a quip on here which was clearly misplaced. The intended recipient doesn't seem to like me much, which is fine, but I genuinely meant something constructively, and it was some way wide of the mark! I meant no animosity, and I still think about it, as despite my periodically abrasive personality on here, I'm not actually a particularly nasy person I don't think!
