A lovely Japanese lady who happens to have graduated from the University of Tokyo with a PhD in Welsh linguistics (seriously) and an evil sense of humour... Sadly my Welsh doesn't go beyond "ARAF YSGOL" but SAESNEG was an interesting new word to become aware of.

Gaelic is the English name, for The Irish language "Gaeilge" and the language of the Highlands and Islands language of the west of Scotland, which is "Gaidhlig".

The Gaidhlig expression Sassanach refers to the English AND the Scots. It simply means Saxon and is used for any person that is used for an outsider that can only speak English and not the Gaidhilg.

Back to the original , POBL SAESNEG BOD IDIOTIAU, I was able to read that simply by knowing a few words of Gaidhlig and English.

The only time I've heard Welsh people speak Welsh is when I've walked into a Welsh pub and the language changes immediately from English to Welsh.

Yup, i used to get that occasionally when I was dating the Welsh girl. She taught me enough so that when someone said to me "POBL SAESNEG BOD IDIOTIAU" I replied back "cofiwch pwy laddodd y ddraig". [Remember who killed the dragon].

She wasn't overly fluent in Welsh, despite being born and bred in Powys, but she reckoned that most of the locals who would speak Welsh behind people's back sounded like village idiots to fluent speakers as they could barely string a basic sentence together. On one occasion, some older women in a pub thought Claire was English, so proceeded to call her a English whore. Claire let rip in Welsh for about five minutes and left the women somewhat red-faced. The bar staff nearly wet themselves laughing as they new exactly what Claire had said. 'Twas rather rude, and thankfully the women didn't understand.

On the whole though, my experiences of the Welsh were overwhelmingly positive. Bloody marvellous singers, always good to go out on the lash with Welsh Young Farmers.
