do any of our members speak Welsh ?

I'm currently in a wargames campaign in the orribley 20mm scale, and I have an idea to have signs on the rear of escort vehicles for convoys / patrols based on the ones seen in Afghan / Iraq.

on the lines of
STAY 100 METRES BACK
IF YOU APPROACH YOU MAY BE FIRED ON

then repeated in Welsh, instead of arabic.

I know, a really daft idea, but would look good IMHO on the rear of a Jackal escorting a convoy or on patrol.

so basically, I need an interpreter. :-[

I have heard, and I make no claims for the accuracy of this story, that a signwriter at a middle -eastern airfield was verbally instructed to write no smoking in Arabic on a fuel bowser. So that's exactly what he did.

How well do you know this person?

With my limited Welsh knowledge, it pays to know what people are saying behind your back when dating a Welsh girl, the bottom line reads "English people are idiots".

A lovely Japanese lady who happens to have graduated from the University of Tokyo with a PhD in Welsh linguistics (seriously) and an evil sense of humour... Sadly my Welsh doesn't go beyond "ARAF YSGOL" but SAESNEG was an interesting new word to become aware of.

TrevL

A friend of mine is Welsh speaking PhD of languages and I'm waiting for a reply to an email I fired off to him. I'll let you know as soon as I know.
Cheers, Trev.

 :thankyousign:
for all your replies, I wasn't expecting to have so many laughs from this post. :smiley-laughing:

Trainfish

I used to work in Wales a lot and often went to different towns and villages to visit shops as part of my job. Every day I saw signs for Gwasanaethau and thought it must be a decent sized place as there were signs for it all along the M4. It took a while to realise that it translated into "Services" and I had in fact visited there several times without realising I was 'in Gwasanaethau'

Whenever I drive in Wales I keep seeing "SLOW ARAF" painted on the roads and I think that these Araf things can't be all that slow coz I've never once seen any of the blighters  :D

managed to get this down to 6 pt Ariel, but how do I get it smaller ?

PaulCheffus

Hi

I assume you are using the drop down. Just overtype with the size you want in the text box without dropping the list down. You might need to press return to make it change.

Cheers

The other way would be to use a text box in Paint, and then printer % to reduce further.
