Evening all!

So I don't know when its going to be released, but I rather fancy one of the Farish flask wagons. My question is, what to run it with?

If I was modelling the current seen I would invest in a DRS loco, but "Filton TMD" is late 90's (last days of BR, first days of EWS), so what would be appropriate for this time period?

My research to date suggest that a pair of HEA hoppers would be suitable barrier wagons, is this correct? What about a brake van?

Any help gratefully received.

it all depends where your layout is based to what locos were used on them

For the late BR period it is very much regional, but a nice pair of class 31s would do the trick; withe at least on in railfreight coal livery. HEAs were used as barriers in some cases, but the brake vans could easily be replicated by a couple of Queen Marys...at least one in SR livery!

Hi There;

Assuming Filton TMD is roughly in the Brizzle area (& within a 40-50 mile radius)... you could have the following choices...with HEAs as barriers & a brake van for branch work (level crossings)...

2 x BR Blue 20 (or one in Red Stripe Railfreight)
1 (or 2) Coal Sector 31s
BR Blue 37
Dutch/Blue or any colour 33
Class 73 in any livery except Gatwick Express

Or alternatively...go with whatever you fancy..

I concur the Berkeley flask trains i can remember seeing are pairs of 20's, 31's and 37's.
Usually with hea barrier wagons and a  brake van or two. You had to have somewhere to put the nuke police escorts.

I would buy some of the new flask wagons but i'm  more a 70's/80's period and I'm pretty sure they didn't have the huge numbers on flask hoods. Will just have to give tpm my business again! Already have one waggon completed all bar the decals from a couple of years back for an abortive Berkeley diorama

nuclear flask trains are interesting...
i have thought about doing a mirco layout based on.. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/43235-saxmundham-and-the-sizewell-coal   <<<< that place.
did findout some interesting stuff on these trains, does anyone know if its true that the second loco always has to be running and have a driving in it when on the move?

Yes STU, Filton TMD is indeed roughly in Brizzle.

I have seen some photos of 31's on nuke duty...but that class is not currently in my fleet (but that could be rectified!).

However, I can provide both a 33 and 73 in "Dutch", so that should be my first choice.

....although Greybeema's suggestion could give me a reason to pick up "Spitifre", something I have nearly done so many times!

Thanks again guys.

Queen Marys were used with 31s on the Trawsfynydd runs via Blaenau Ffestiniog. In part because there was no loop so the entire train was propelled slowly in one direction.

I saw several flasks being hauled by class 60's on the wcml in the Wigan area around 1992. Although coal sector 31's were the usual traction.

If it's any help, DRS have been transporting the flasks since 1997, usually with 37s or 20s in pairs (or mixed pairs), but 57s and 66s have also been noted on them.

Skyline2uk

Chris I have to admit that an original livery DRS class 47 is very tempting...seen some at reasonable prices too.

Also came across a webiste (lego trains of all things) that said some HEA's had thier hoppers removed leaving just the chassis for barrier duty. This may be investigated when I switch from layout building to stock work.

The new farish 20's are out soon, i'd wait for them. I know it's a bit out of region (Bristol born and bred so I should know !) but they do look good with the flasks...  ;D

Most of the flasks i saw in the Bristol area had 31's in Dutch livery - this was about 1993 to 1995 ish.
If it's got rails... you have my full, undivided attention - Steam, diesel and electric, 'tis all good !

Ohhh new 20's!? When are they due then? Any chance one will be in coal sector (probably a long shot but Red Stripe is too early for me).
