Why ?

Everything I get is for running on the layout so I am assuming that is 'modelling' although it could also be 'collecting'. I do not have anything in display cabinets

I seem to be more of a collector at moment due to family life getting in the way.
Everything i buy is intended to be run in line with my chosen period.
Even if i'm not going to be running it straight away you have to get your desired items when they become available or they might not be around later!

I collect with the intention of adding to the modelling experience.

So... sometimes I'm a 'collector' and at other times I'm engaged in  'modelling'.

Seriously though, collecting and modelling are one and the same to me, after all if you own more than one loco surely that counts as a collection ?

I understand that some just collect, i think that's a real shame especially in the case of loco's, - would you buy an Aston Martin DB5 and never drive it Oh and yes, i would buy a bugatti veyron and take it shopping !

I was a collector due to lack of layout...

Now I've got one of the best layouts in the UK N Gauge world, I'm still a collector who gets to run some model Diesels....

I haven't bought anything I can't / won't run yet (no Blue Pullman, no main-line kettles, no HST), so maybe I'm a modeller...

I haven't built, altered, repainted or otherwise created anything original yet, so maybe I'm a collector...

I have spent a lot of time with polystyrene and glue, and with wire, soldering iron and chocablock, so maybe I'm a modeller...

I play with trains in my spare time, so maybe I'm a nerd

I have a few non-runners that date back to the 1970s. They still have sentimental value even if they don't run anymore so I have them on show in a corner of my layout. Are these collectibles or models? Not sure, but I won't be letting them go anywhere anytime soon

I have two Hobbies.

One is British Railways both Steam and Diesel which involves lots of book and magazine reading, watching and amassing a large collection of DVDs and web studying.

The other hobby is building a model railway.

Buying trains is a necessary bi-product of both of the above.

Every bit of stock I've bought is specifically to fit in with the location/era of the layout and I wouldn't buy anything that didn't (even though I'd LOVE a new Deltic. ), so I class that as modelling rather than collecting

I have to say I must join the vast minority and judge myself as being a collector. If it is MI and if I can afford it at the time I will buy any new passenger model in the livery I prefer. I am an OTT rtr freelancer and  don't display them in a case but actually run them! However, I am constantly changing  (improving??) my layout so perhaps I am a modeller in a small way. The main thing like most of us is I enjoy it and after nearly 40 years of N I'll never change now! I'm just beginning to get excited about the Blue Pullman arriving.

I regard myself as a modeller. I do have a few models that would be rather unlikely on my BLT such as Evening Star (although it was popular on Railtours so just maybe ). I do have a BP on order which I don't think will physically fit on the platform so I suppose that is teetering on collector....

I prefer to think of it as an excuse for a larger layout.
