Then you may not agree with one of my best football memories as a Brighton supporter. The match was awful, a penalty won it but it was a great day out at the Millennium Stadium and Brighton actually won a playoff - 30/5/04

It was indeed a dire game which from my point of view was soon forgotten.
I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.

Train Waiting

The 1973 South African Grand Prix.

Mike Hailwood, on his second attempt and despite having been on fire himself, pulled Clay Regazzoni from his burning car.

Ever modest, 'Mike the Bike' afterwards said, "Any fireman would have done it."

He was awarded the George Medal, the second-highest British civilian award for gallantry.

With all good wishes.

John

PS Sadly, Mike Hailwood and his daughter were killed in a car accident quite soon afterwards. They were driving to get some fish and chips.

The Table-Top Railway is an attempt to create, in British 'N' gauge,  a 'semi-scenic' railway in the old-fashioned style, reminiscent of the layouts of the 1930s to the 1950s.

Quite soon? I saw Hailwood at the Easter Bathurst Bike races in the late 70s (It was later than Easter 1976 because I didn't get my Nikon until later in the year) and I photographed him racing across the top. He died in 1981.

Well, Sydney 2000 keeps producing, even all these years later. Aussie Grace Kim (b Sydney 2000) won the Evian women's golf major on the weekend after producing an amazing eagle at the 18th to make the playoff, then a chip in birdie at the 1st playoff at the 18th to stay in it, and followed up with another eagle 3 on the par 5 18th, being the 2nd playoff hole. I know what her favourite moments will be.
Played the 18th 3 times for an eagle, birdie, eagle.

Amazing, Grace.  :D

Dan Burns goal in the Carabao Cup Final  this year for me. A lad from Blyth scored Newcastle's first goal at Wembley for 25 years and got us on the way to our first domestic trophy for 70 years.
After 50 odd years I'd honestly given up hope of the toon winning anything!
Cheers Colin

for me personally, there are several -
seeing Colin Mcrae and then Richard Burns winning the World Rally Championship.
Going to Twickenham to see Cornwall win the Rugby County Championship.
Joining thousands of other Plymouth Argyle fans in Plymouth to see the open top bus when we won promotion.
Best wishes

It was held before I was born, but the 1979 Daytona 500 is always a favorite. It's a race I can go back and re-watch often. First NASCAR race shown start to finish in its entirety (500 miles), and the finish itself was pretty wild. The full race is up on YouTube, along with one or two shows about it (The Day: 1979 Daytona 500 and Perfect Storm: 1979 Daytona 500)
There are a ton of moments at Daytona and Talladega that I would consider a favorite.

On the open wheel side, the 1982 and 1992 Indy 500 finishes are faves. It's weird how those two years are so similar to each other (race wise).

Boston RedSox winning the World Series in 2004.

This broke a drought of 86 years, a period known as the "Curse of the Bambino". Boston sold a player who was overweight, a heavy drinker &, reputably, something of a womaniser to the New York Yankees as they thought Babe Ruth was just about done.

The Yankees then went from a lacklustre team to one of the most successful teams in baseball history.

The curse had been such a part of Boston culture that when a "reverse curve" road sign on Longfellow Bridge over the city's Storrow Drive was graffitied to read "Reverse The Curse",officials left it in place until the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series. After the World Series that year, the road sign was edited to read "Reversed Curse" in celebration before its removal.

The Red Sox's championship was prefaced by them overcoming a 3–0 deficit against the Yankees in the 2004 American League Championship Series (ALCS), the first and, as of 2024, only time an MLB team won a best-of-seven playoff series after losing the first three games.

Sometimes you bite the dog...

...sometimes the dog bites you!

I can explain it to you...

...but I can't understand it for you.

LASteve

I've got a couple or three ...

Franz Klammer winning the downhill at Kitzbühel in 1984. He was pretty much at the end of his career and wasn't looked at as a serious contender. When you watch the replay he's all flailing arms and legs, it seems impossible he didn't crash and his aerodynamics were terrible.

Chelsea winning the Champion's League against Bayern at their stadium in 2012. The final went to penalties, and despite going 1-0 down when Juan Mata missed Chelsea's first, Didier Drogba banged home the fifth to win 4-3. Great drama and we watched it in our local bar in LA with a bunch of other Chelsea fans.

This year, Rory McIlroy finally getting his Masters and completing the career Grand Slam.

As mentioned prior, Bob Willis and Ian Botham in the Headingley test in 1981. Mike Brearley gets props for getting Willis to switch ends early in the innings so he could bowl down the slope.

For sheer amusement value, Brian Moore being picked up by the touchline mic at helf-time against France at Twickenham in 1989. England were 6-0 up and Moore was clearly heard on live TV exhorting the team to "Give those blanks blank all". It worked, England won 11-0

I've got a few more, but those'll do.
