It was indeed a dire game which from my point of view was soon forgotten.

The 1973 South African Grand Prix.

Mike Hailwood, on his second attempt and despite having been on fire himself, pulled Clay Regazzoni from his burning car.

Ever modest, 'Mike the Bike' afterwards said, "Any fireman would have done it."

He was awarded the George Medal, the second-highest British civilian award for gallantry.

PS Sadly, Mike Hailwood and his daughter were killed in a car accident quite soon afterwards. They were driving to get some fish and chips.

Quite soon? I saw Hailwood at the Easter Bathurst Bike races in the late 70s (It was later than Easter 1976 because I didn't get my Nikon until later in the year) and I photographed him racing across the top. He died in 1981.
