I think P+D Marsh also do painted ones, as well as unpainted.

Also you might want to look at things like Merton and Preisser European figures.

In the '50s and '60s, wouldn't the diesel locos have a second-man/driver's assistant - the equivalent of the steam loco's fireman?

Dalek

I take it for most diesel installs I'm going to be cutting these people in half to make them fit ?

Diesels did require two crew, at least until the late 70s. I'm not sure when single manning became normal.

There was an exception where DMUs and EMUs could be single manned, again not sure of the date but much earlier than diesels.

A sticking point with the unions on the introduction of HST was the demand for double manning, at least at first.

On many modern diesel models then you do need to cut the figures off and just use the upper body.

'Fraid so - even though that means driving when legless ;D

Further reason for double manning-restricted view from driver's position.

Cl 15 and 16 (and 08?) were not permitted to be single manned due to the bonnets restriction visibility. Cl 20 I think could only be single manned if cab leading, not cab trailing. It was one reason they tended to work in pairs, at least in later life.

To the best of my knowledge they are unpainted and, although maybe the best, are very expensive at over £4 per figure

I tend to buy cheap Chinese people and cut their legs off before fitting them into the coaches. Some coaches also have a pair of legs sticking up from the seat just to give it some colour inside. With my eyesight at least you can't see that it's a pair of legs unless you get very very close. I don't like to waste those legs

I'm not so sure this would be effective with drivers in a cab though.

I'm debating which ones to buy too; first research indicates Farish Scenecraft set has only 2 usable driver & fireman figures, so Modelu (although unpainted) may well be competitive. They also do figures for right-hand drive locos e.g GWR.
Anyone with experience of painting Modelu figures would be more than welcome to contribute here please.
