I have been to Tasmania by ferry with a car loaded up with camping gear, two daughters, and a wife for about two weeks. A wonderful trip and wished it were longer. Highlights were Port Arthur (we visited a month before the massacre there) and the coastline around Burnie in the northwest where the sea was coloured reddish brown by kraft pulp mill effluent. Another highlight was the 'moonscape' around Queenstown where the residue from smelting operations has rendered the surrounding hills barren and as colourful as the painted desert in Arizona.

All seriousness aside though, Tasmania is a fabulous place to visit for its scenery, history, and also because it brews the best beer in Australia IMO. When you can get a glass of it poured in a Hobart pub not more than a few blocks from the Cascade Brewery, it's even better.

Yep, lovely place. Forgotten how many times we've been there, but it's easily in double figures. @Platy767 I've even had a few beers in the pub at Derwent Bridge. In fact the landlord was from Wollongong at the time.

Anyway, first day of winter today! Hope it stays like this

Quote from: Bealman on May 31, 2025, 03:20:29 PMYes, I noticed in the paper the other day that it was in Scotland. Never been on the boat to Tassie, though I know a few who have. Always seemed a bit silly to me driving your own car all the way to Melbourne, putting it on a boat, then driving it around Tasmania just to have to do it all again in reverse.

Much easier to get on a plane for a couple of hours. Driving to Sydney airport is bad enough! ;)

We took the car last time we went over, they were doing a special and it was more cost effective to take the ferry and take the car, than fly and hire. Plus it meant SWMBO could take all she wanted.
Daytime sailings both way, very pleasant. As we wandered round there was even a lady operating a spinning wheel to while away the time.

Melbourne is a bit closer, though!

Yes it was easier, get up early, to Port Melbourne for 7am and sail at 9.
Now of course you have to go down to Corio, which would mean an overnight stay in Geelong before boarding for a day time sailing.

Kerbs.

In relation to the earlier post by @Papyrus when I totalled the tyre, this is not the kerb I hit, but when I was in town this afternoon I took these shots of the Bealmobile. This is a typical height, but some are bigger!

Hit these at any sort of speed and you will do damage, that I know! :*(

With kerbs like these, best not to drive at them at speed.

Wasn't intentional, Ian, I assure you!

I don't know what the kerbs have ever done to you, but if you're going to target them I suggest you get a sensible 4 x 4

Papyrus

With high kerbs I would have thought there would be a risk of scraping the bottom of the door when you get out. Do the car repair companies have a secret deal with the local council?

Cheers,

Chris

Bealman

Maybe! Door scraping is a regular occurrence.
