Just woke up to a text from my old schoolmate who lives in Wellington informing me about the very very shakey night he had. 7.8 quake with it's epicentre near Hanmer Springs in the South Island, two dead.

Let's hope all our numerous Kiwi members are safe.

Very sorry to hear this.
7.8 is a big 'un so I hope casualties are at a minimum :worried:

Your hope is met - only 2 fatal casualties which for a 7.5 quake is extraordinary although the epicentre was in a sparsely popuated area. I couldn't get out of my chair as my world seemed like it was at sea. Brian

Wow. Very scary. My mate said his place was rattling around for a very long time.

Heard from friends in Wellington - they said that it was scary as they were shaken around quite a bit, but they are OK.

7.8 is a very big earthquake. Good thing it wasn't under a larger town than Hanmer Springs. I suppose it's not really a coincidence that the epicentre was there as its hot springs derive from a geological fault. Very nice hot springs complex as I found during my visit a few years ago.

It's sad that there is any loss of life but in an earthquake of that magnitude it could have been far worse......
If you like it run it......

I experienced the North ridge earthquake in LA.
It was 6.8 magnitude.
7.8 is extremely big. I can't even imagine how powerful it is.
If you know someone live in the vicinity, please tell them be careful for aftershocks those are dangerous as well.
I pray for the person who passed away.
Also, I pray for the people who involved in this and their quick recovery.

My sympathies to all those whose lives have been affected.
Perhaps the proof that there is intelligent life in outer space is that they haven't contacted us.

A pretty amazing photo. They don't call NZ the Shaky Isles for nothing.

The recent quake was stronger than the one that devestated Christchurch some years back. The difference being this one occurred in a relatively unpopulated area just after midnight, whereas the Christchurch one hit the city at lunch time on a working day.
