Hi chaps, I've been reading a bit about the southern region and had a couple for questions that some EMU/BR(S) gurus might be able to help with.

Regarding the 411CEP where would this have roamed on the network. How far out of the big smoke would it have reached?

Secondly, regarding the Farish CEP, would the chassis be suitable for using under another EMU body type? If so, what are the options in terms of available kits?

Any help, as always, gratefully received.

The CEP chassis should be suitable for most MK1 based EMUs though underframe equipment might need moving around and some bogies differed in style. Grahame Hedges has written several articles on Mk1 EMUs including for the Journal that would give you more details.

Cheers. Mike

My memory of the 4-CEPs was that they were introduced as part of the Kent Coast electrification and were mainly found on longer distance services on the Southern Region's Eastern Division. They ran fast and semi fast services out of Charing Cross, Cannon Street and Victoria mainly to destinations in Kent and East Sussex, including boat trains to Dover and Folkestone. A typical formation would be 12 coaches formed of 2 4-CEPs and a 4-BEP, which included a buffet car.

They may have roamed further afield later in their lives, others may be able to comment.

A small number were allocated to the Central Division for the Victoria - Bognor/Portsmouth service. Normally a 4BEP/4CEP formation splitting at Barnham with the 4CEP going to Portsmouth and the 4BEP going to Bognor. Twelve  coach CEP/BEP/CEP formations worked some businessmans services between Victoria and Brighton.

The CEP chassis is suitable for all 1957 Stock, BR 4 EPB and later 2HAP. With minor detail changes it is suitable for 1951 Stock.

Thank you everyone for the responses, all valuable information.

Next question on the back of all that. Did the 411s ever run as single 4 car sets? if so where would they likely be? Would they have mixed with the other RTR BR (S) motive power such as the N and the Schools classes and the Pacifics?

I've just bought three four car sets on a bit of a whim (well at that price....) so I think you can see where this is going.

Solo 4CEP's ran between Ashford and Ramsgate/Margate, Faversham and Dover and Barnham and Portsmouth Harbour. Each route was after they had been detached from the main portion at the first mentioned location.

In the early days steam locos were still used on none passenger trains and occasionally on passenger trains upto 1965ish.
