What a grim week it's been!

Earlier in the week the builder chappies working on the block that I live in managed to put a spade through my phone line. It was hard for the technician to do anything about, as the problem was intermittent. A few days later they managed to cut the cable again, in a different place. This was now making things very difficult for the techs who were trying to find the fault with an echo locator. This approach was made necessary as they were being denied access to the building site without precise information about where the break was. "You can't just come in 'ere and dig random 'oles mate!".
It came to a head yesterday when a digger they were using completely ripped the cable out of the ground. There was no question then about where the break was!
To their enormous credit, Openreach had a guy here, and had a cable laid, within two hours of being advised of the new development.
Then, at 6am yesterday, a fleet of trucks turned up to remove spoil from the site. Three large vehicles and a digger parked right outside of my bedroom window where they proceeded to load the vehicles with the unwanted material. During the entire process, 2 hours, the lorry engines were left running. Talk about rattling windows!
I've said before, I'm going to have a great place to live after it's is all over but if I ever have to go through the experience of this again, well, I won't! It'll be a hotel or landing on a relatives floor/settee/spare room...
(and I never quite realised what a pain in the bum it is trying to use the 'net with just a cell connection!)

Tip: if you remove the cellphone you'll get a better connection and it will hurt less.

But seriously, I once lived in an apartment directly next to which another apartment block was going up... Not fun.

I share your pain with Construction work.....Someone is building 7 "luxury " houses in what was a field behind me - They must be the slowest builders ever, they have been at it over a year!

Also I use a 3 Dongle for Internet access and it is as fast as my friends landlines

I can symaphise with that.
Many years ago whilst living in Singapore, they were constructing a high rise condo on the next plot.
On the East Coast, the land is reclaimed and/or on estuary silt.
Consequently, the piles for a high rise condo were driven dozens and dozens of feet down.
The thumping pile drivers, apart from shaking pictures off the wall and crockery out of cupboards, drove directly into the pain centres of the brain.  We were unable to move because the apartment was tied to the job.
It was not en experience I shall repeat!!!

not sure about your side of the border but down here most councils dont like construction noise before 8AM or after 6pm during the week ,after 1pm on a saturday,or at all on sundays and bank holidays.might want to check your local councils guidelines and make the main contractor pay for a nice 5*hotel  if its going to happen again

Yes, exactly. We were told that no noise/work would happen before 8am or after 4pm. But this was a subcontractor who just turned up and loaded their trucks before the main contractors arrived. They were driving away as the main contractors people arrived on site. It won't happen again. (I'm told!)

I've just had the gas people round to have a look at the existing plumbing. NOT a good visit. It now seems that some of the gas piping here was laid before current legislation and is thus a problem. I wonder what they were expecting? The building is 30+ years old!

The guy who was here is not the one who will make the final call on how to proceed but his feeling is that there will be, possibly, a serious delay in getting the work done that will get me access to the place where my layout is to be built. I asked him what actually comprises a 'serious delay'. The response was, 'Oh, it could be months and months!'.

I have another meeting with the architect and some council people on Thursday, so believe me, many questions will be asked!!! My only area of hope lies in the fact that the delays will also impinge on gas supply to the new build that is part of this work and I really don't see them being allowed to hold that up for '... months and months!' due to the shortage of housing in the area.

After Thursday I may come on the forum asking if anyone knows of a handy arms dealer - small bombs and large machine guns will be what I will be looking for.

For now, I will try to remain sane and continue with some software/hardware development relating to on-screen control of the points system that I HOPE to have working at some time. Unless I decide to go out and demolish the entire place with my head! Can you all join me in yelling 'FRUSTRATION' please...

Maybe at the meeting on Thursday you could throw some of that aforesaid brown sticky stuff into the rotating thingy such that someone, somewhere, extracts their digit.

Maybe at the meeting on Thursday you could throw some of that aforesaid brown sticky stuff into the rotating thingy such that someone, somewhere, extracts their digit.

The trouble if they start extracting digits is, that might increase the quantity of floating around looking for a rotating thingy
