Sorry Jane, I've been promising myself one for ages, just wanted to get it at the lowest price. It doesn't really fit in with my current modelling, but I have promised myself that one day I would build a replica of the Bulleid double-deck trains that I went on as a child between Charing Cross and Dartford. The CEP reminds me of the more ordinary trains we used to catch for outings.

I am finding it very hard to resist the Dapol Class 22 with six tankers on their web site.  Just wish they had better images of the loco and tankers.  So the loco is green not blue and the tankers are white not silver?

Couldn't resist any more once I found out it was green not blue.

Well. I've just started to run my new Dapol 22 in after oiling as per the instructions, and I've got a feeling I might be sending it back. Looks beautiful, as do the milk tankers, but is getting rather hot. Ran really well and smoothly in one direction, but started to slow and jerk slightly when run in the opposite direction just like;

I took both bogies and checked them - both are free turning, although one was packed with grease and had a big lump of fluff on one of the gears. I've also put a drop of oil onto the worm just to dissolve any further grease.

Running it with the body off, I have noticed that the foam/rubber insulation over the motor bush plugs seem to be melting!! I'm going to run it for a bit longer with the body off to see if it cools down a bit, otherwise I will be e-mailing Dapol tomorrow to return it for a replacement.

A bit disappointing as my other 22 runs beautifully.

My 22 does seem to be getting better over time. It feels a bit warm, but not really hot, after 30 mins running at medium speed. It has had about 2-3 hours running in now and is noticeably quieter in both directions. Occasionally slows down and sometimes stops at slow speed especially when pulling it milk wagons and an LMS full brake. Still starts off with a jerk on occasions. It is, however getting slowly better. I think everything must have been a bit tight.

It's by no means perfect but is becoming acceptably usable.

Also - be warned - I emailed Dapol about this problem a few days ago and there is no sign of a response. I haven't followed my email up yet because there's a good chance I'll be keeping my 22 now. However, this is not good customer service.

I've just re-sent an EMail I sent to Dapol regarding some questions on the new Maunsell coaches as I haven't had a reply after 3 weeks - it may well be that my original mail ran foul of their recent server outage, but if not, not a good sign.
