MP4 too big, simple reduction programme?

Friends, I have recorded my First video of the First time my Dapol loco "William Shakespeare" has completed a full circuit and the First time I have trackwork that actually works!

The video is 72 Mb in size and takes ages to upload to the 'net.

Can someone help in recommending an idiots programme and instructions to reduce the size but retain the definition?

How long is your video Peter?

72Mb is not unusually long for a short video of approx 1 to 2 minutes.

Uploading always takes a long time.

I found a new program recently called freemake.

Give that a try. It will convert to different formats and also allow you to change the bitrate I think to reduce the file size if you need to. It can also rotate videos, hand for if like me you shoot them on your phone then realise it's upside down.

Might I suggest uploading to Youtube or a hosting site like Microsoft onedrive or Picasaweb then just posting a link to your video stored there, you only need to upload once and don't have problems with forums not accepting large files.

I've uploaded files to MS onedrive of over 500Mb, I shudder to think of how long it must take to upload Youtube files of an hour duration or more!

I recently uploaded a 39 minute video to Youtube, took about 14 hours in total 

Don't forget even if you have a decent broadband service the upload speed is usually around one tenth of your maximum download speed 


Just to add that videos should always be uploaded to Youtube or a similar site rather than the NGF media section as video files eat up HUGE amounts of server space

That is the one I use as well and I am sure there are a few members on the forum use it as well

When you do use the program Peter, your video file will end up being in a different format, so you may have to try a few formats before you get one you are happy with the end result.

mp4 is already a very compressed video format, the only way to reduce file size is to reduce the video resolution to 640 x 480 or less.
