Ikea Billy Bookcase Shelf Layout
« on: June 16, 2014, 12:46:59 pm »
Since i'm not allowed to take over the conservatory all the time to play trains i came up the idea of using a spare bookcase shelf for a little DC shunting layout. Something that can be take out, used and put back away very easily.

I've come up with the following track plan, what do people think?, I'm just looking at using a Class 08 shunter and a few wagons

Looks good to me. Plenty of shunting action as it is and could be easily extended from either or both ends modular fashion if you get the room.
I like it. Mickey26

Not the Inglenook Siding Puzzle! No one expects the Inglenook Siding Puzzle.

Whilst I like the plan, I don't like the set track points
I'd put money on you getting poor running over them with an 08 so would really ask you to look at the space available and use the Peco code 55 small points instead :hmmm:

Or use 00-9 (SL-E491/2) short points and maybe track to add character

Store my layout on the same shelf. Its a fraction smaller, but along the same lines.
08 & setrack point worked okay up until weathering and ballasting. Now everythings a bit iffy.
I would definitely use the electro from next time.

Also how about a smaller runaround loop in there for added interest ??

My original thought was OO-9, which I would love to do someday, i think if i did OO-9 track work I'd want to go narrow gauge loco's too

OK so now the nights are getting darker and the weather wetter and the temperature colder it's been time to pack Colworth Hill away for the winter. Time to make a start on Billybrook Yard.

I loaded up my existing track plan into SCARM and it just wasn't floating my boat.  So I've had a redesign, well I've had several and this is where I'm at right now, just a little diesel fuelling yard. All code 55.

The two tracks on the left will lead to a fiddle yard made from another bookcase shelf that can just be bolted on when needed and then put back in the bookcase when not in use.

Very nice. If you have / plan to have one of the latest Class 08 models with outside cranks, use that to test all clearances before fixing any track down. (Excellent advice from friends who have; which is why I have invested in a BR Blue Class 08 with outside cranks for testing the future track on Cant Cove.)

The billy book shelves are just a single sheet of chipboard and as such are prone to warping. A much better choice would be to use a "Lack" floating shelf. These are made using a ply box style construction which is much more rigid (rather like a smaller version of a plywood door).

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/90282180/

They also come in a variety of length including a 190cm version which would be enough to fit a decent little layout on. You could almost manage "Minories" on a shelf that size if you are happy to use setrack points.
Well, that's just not good enough. Some fount of all knowledge you are!   ;)

Thanks for the input chaps.

The whole idea was that I could just take the shelf out of the book case, have a play and then put it back up again when I was done. This is just a fun little mess around layout for over the winter. The shelves are thick so I don't think warping will be an issue, well I hope not :-)

A second shelf will act as a fiddle yard which I can just attach to the end of the layout if I so fancy.
