A somewhat eclectic day as regards what I listened to - some classical, some Bonzos, some Uriah Heep and some AC/DC ???

Had me for a moment as I thought that Serge (synthesizer in the little window) made it back, but the video is 5 years old. He remained in Ukraine to help his parents.

On this rather wet Monday morning I've been listening to whatever tunes/songs I have based on classical pieces so:-

ELP - Pictures at an Exhibition (Mussorgsky)
Eric Carmen - All by myself (Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto)
Love Sculpture* - Sabre Dance (Khachaturian)
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Joybringer (Holst's Planet Suite - Jupiter)
The Nice - Intermezzo (Sibelius 'Karelia')
The Nice - Pathetique 3rd movement (Tchaikovsky)
The Nice - Country Pie (Bach's Brandenburg concertos)
William Orbit - Adagio for Strings (Samuel Barber)

*Love Sculpture was Dave Edmunds under another name (who'd have thunk it?)

Anyone got any other recommendations, please?

I watched the Eagles Farewell Tour in Melbourne. That was awesome as they stuck to form and didn't go all artsy, out of form. Sounded great! And I heard a couple of new songs that I hadn't heard before.

Jon Lord - Gemini Suite

Orchestral version of Tubular Bells

Newportnobby

Thanks, Martin.
'Tubular Bells' was not based on a classical piece. Was 'Gemini Suite'?

Agreed.
No, I think Gemini Suite was entirely composed by Jon Lord.

Mick @Newportnobby , I did have ELPs "PAAE" on vinyl on its original release, but of the others I only have William Orbit's/Barber's "Adagio for Strings" on a CD single! I have been out for most of the day so I have not listened to anything yet.

Other than Renaissance's er sampling of Russian classical music and Keith Emerson's "Piano Concerto No.1" (Works Vol. 1) I cannot think of much else. Oh, I do have Steve Hackett's "Midsummer Nights Dream", which is rather dull... None are wholly based on classical pieces.

@Moonglum Tim - this is the best William Orbit version (Ferry Corsten mix)
Even my Mum used to love this

Edit:- I used to have Deep Purple's 'Concerto for Group and Orchestra' on vinyl, some of which was good and some was dire! It wasn't based on any well known classical piece, though

Moonglum

Yes Mick, I can just imagine you on the dance floor enjoying that!

Those days are long gone, Tim, but I've always regretted (even in my 60s) never getting to a rave :D

Moonglum

Mick @Newportnobby , that's a version I have on the single, playing it now through my main system with a bit of welly! Best bit is when the synth strings come in... then it goes a bit Faithless-y... released in 1999* - the same year the moon blasted out of orbit (no pun intended)!

Tim

*Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's Space 1999.
