Alex

Hi,

I got a Fuji finepixels camera for Xmas but just recently it has started to give problems when focusing. On checking out Fuji's website it stated that the camera may require a software update to fix this problem. On checking the cameras software I found it had the latest version. So it got sent back and I was given a refund.

Yesterday I went and bought a Panasonic Lumix LZ20. The layout is quite similar to the old camera so took some piccies of my trains.

Normally I have to use the flash when I'm in the shed but these were all taken without it.

Not bad. Have to play with it a bit more.

Nice looking camera for the price Alex, I have had a few Fuji cameras and like them a lot but this one could tempt me to add yet another camera to my collection  :-[

cheers John.

I did like the Fuji camera but the fault put me off getting a straight replacement. My mate has a Lumix and he says they're great, no his names not Tony  :D, so thought I'd try one.

I bought a Lumix a couple of years ago and am well impressed with it.
Nice pics, Alex

I have had a Fuji Finepics for about 6 years now, and it still takes very good photo's for its size and price. It is also pretty good in low light or indoor situations. If I need a compact camera then that is the one I take with me.

However, I got some money a few years ago, and, having always liked using SLR (Single Lens Reflex) film cameras after studying photography at school, I decided to go out and get a Lumix G2. Great digital SLR - does far too much for me, and I mostly have it on intelligent auto! However, it takes great pics, whatever mode I use it on - and is even better than the Fuji indoors!

So, shame to hear about the Fuji, but, in my opinion, you couldn't have done better than the Lumix!

I have a Panasonic LZ8. Never had a days trouble with it. Simply to use and takes good pics. Probably stick with Panasonic next time

Most Lumix cameras have a great Macro setting that is ideal for layout shots, I used an FZ7 for quite a long time and it was great.

Good luck with the new camera Alex and hope to see lots more great shots like those above in the future

Haven't tried the Macro setting yet.

The pictures are looking realistic Alex, great job.

Nice photos and camera.  My first digital camera was an Olympus but then we switched to Canon and they have been very good.  I was thinking of upgrading and was looking at:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PowerShot-A1400-Digital-Camera/dp/B00AX0MPLE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367239261&sr=8-1&keywords=canon+a1400

What do people think?  Any experience with this particular model and/or current Canon compacts?

Many thanks

Hi Paddy

I've used Canon cameras and been happy with them, as long as they lasted.

Here's a review that you may find helpful despite it being from an American magazine:

Thanks Dave.  Unless I am reading this wrong the Canon does not come out of that review very well.

So given a £100-ish budget what is the best buy compact camera?

Many thanks

Go for the one with the smallest "F" number for the lense and the biggest optical zoom, apart from those two they are all much the same at that price range  ;)

cheers John.

Thanks John.  So, excuse my ignorance and to make sure I am looking at the right "F" (ooh er).  On this Sony is it the F that is 3.3-5.9?

http://www.sony.co.uk/product/dsc-w-series/dsc-wx200/technical-specifications#tab

I notice on the next camera up the range which has a 20x optical zoom the F number is 3.5-6.5.

Which is best/worst?

Many thanks
