...I do not have enough materials in the house to start a build and any wood suppliers round about are shut. (Apparently building a train layout is not classed as 'essential'

Oh yes they are for our sanity

Now for something completely stupid

Could you link the two small available areas by running a shelf along the walls, lifting bridges at doorways where required.

That is actually not that stupid Mike. The 8' x 2' area is at right angles to the 4' x 3' area, but about 9 inches lower, with a space of about 18 inches between, so not beyond the realms of possibility. The 4' x 3' area can not be lowered, but the top of the 8' x 2' could be made higher and it would still be at a useable height.  :hmmm:

Can you
a) modify your current layout to connect its tracks to another layout?
b) put the new layout and the old in the same room?

Then you could keep the old layout, connect it to the new layout. The old layout could then serve as a "invisible outer world", which makes for a longer roundtrip time for the trains and the old layout could serve as train store for the new layout.
AND, IF you want to run some godd old english trains, then the new layout yould serve as train store for the old layout.

If the view of Burolington diesel in between some english cottages distrubs, then hide it behind a curtain.

Quick thought. If someone knocked on your door and offered to buy your old layout, what would be your immediate reaction?

Trainfish

I'm not sure about David but I'd be telling them to step back 2 metres first  :D

Actually, if that happened to me, it would solve my dilemma quite simply!  ;D

How did you find me? I live in the middle of nowhere!  :). (It's a bit rural where I am).

Now I am worried, I even remember watching that as a kid in the early sixties

Interesting dilemma, David and one I have faced twice. My first layout I built flat and had to keep crawling underneath and I am not getting any younger so that had to go. I then made my second layout "east Lancashire lines", it was a lot better, modular so no need to crawl under neath but because of the eaves in the loft I still had to crawl under to get in the centre. On both occasions I kept part of the layout, the viaduct section, and I have managed to fit that into the new layout. Two feet deep is a bit restricting so you might be better starting again, I have managed to squeeze two levels on my new layout, it's a figure 8 of sorts but I like watching the trains go round and they go round twice now much happier.  At the end of the day go with your instincts, it's your railway and get it to do what you want it to do. Keep Safe.

My new layout  East Lancashire Railway
My old layout was Irwell Valley Railway.
Layout previous was East Lancashire Lines, changed this new one. My new layout here.
