Hi All
We have a ten day holiday lined up in Norfolk in mid September.
At the moment we are thinking about a rough itinerary and have many things planned and would certainly like to fit in a few of the local railways.
It seems on the face of it that the North Norfolk Railway and the Wells and Walsingham LR are definitely worth visiting but we're not so sure about the Bure Valley, Mid Norfolk or Bressingham.
What are other folk's thoughts please bearing in mind that we probably can't fit them all in with everything else that we want to do.
The Mid Norfolk is one that we might visit but not travel on.
Cheers
Martin
I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.

Maybe one of the branch lines out of Norwich.  Best persons to ask @Southerngooner and @martyn

Sadly you'll Miss our Broadland MRC club open day / show 28th Aug 10:30-16:00 At the Stalham Community Gym  NR12 9BH. But if you are in the area of Catfield, on Friday evenings I could let you into Broadland Model railway club for a visit.

If you are near the broads you can hire a day boat and visit a 7.5 Inch  / 3.5 Inch line At Barton House Railway in Wroxham, they're open 18th Sept https://bhrw.org.uk/index.php

That way you merge two things to do in Norfolk in one...

Oof course if you wish to use a branch line, then the obvious one is the Norwich Sheringham line, because the other side of the road in Sheringham is the North Norfolk, also in Sheringham is Smiths Model shop just down the high street that divides the NNR from BR..
The Same line Stops at Hoveton / Wroxham station, a few feet from the Bure Valley Railway, a few more feet from https://wroxhamminiatureworlds.co.uk/ and a few more feet from Hire day yards to take you to the afore mentioned Barton House railway.

Hi Martin,

Not railway related, sorry can't help there, but might you be going to Norwich on the 14th Sept. by any chance?

Cheers, weave  :beers:

The Merrivale Model Village and Garden Railway at Great Yarmouth is well worth a visit.

Hi Chris
Unfortunately not I'm afraid.
We couldn't quite fit that in around other things.
A shame but never mind.

Train Waiting

We've been at Bressingham a couple of times and I had a sort of a hint of a feeling that its best days were, perhaps, behind it.

But there are some interesting narrow gauge lines to ride on and...

In the museum one gets an opportunity to see some glorious 'last in class' locomotives.  For anyone with more than a passing interest in steam traction, that makes a visit very worthwhile.

The North Norfolk Railway is fabulous ++ (not just because they call it the 'Poppy Line'!) and is well worth a visit.

We've not been on the Bure Valley, but it's on the 'wish list'.  Several years ago, after the horrid workshop fire caused by an arsonist, the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway borrowed a blue tank engine from the Bure Valley, Wroxham Broad.  I had a very good run behind her and Mr van Zellar, who was driving, was especially complimentary about her.  I'd certainly like to see her and her chums in action on their own turf.  I understand there is a model shop at the Bure Valley as well.

Happy Holiday

John

The Table-Top Railway is an attempt to create, in British 'N' gauge,  a 'semi-scenic' railway in the old-fashioned style, reminiscent of the layouts of the 1930s to the 1950s.

The BVR is well worth a visit as their shop sells stuff at Hattons prices but with better service! We did the cycle route alongside the line last week which was a good trip but have yet to actually go on the line. The NNR is excellent, not so keen on the WaW or MNR

Don't  miss the   Bure  valley!  Go  to  Aylsham. Your tickets assign you  to  a specific  compartment so no worries about   finding  a seat. V  pleasant run to Wroxham. 5  min  walk into  town to  see  the   broads  boating  center. You  can do  a  river trip too if  want ! ( combined  ticket available I think)
In Wroxham you will  def want to  inspect the  bridge over the river. There  is also  a   model village!

Back in  Aylsham you  might  want to  wear  a blindfold as  you pass  through  the   model  shop!

Yet another  possibility is  the  train  from  Norwich  to  Cromer ! Lots  to  see  and  do  there  in  this quaint seaside  town.

If you are into a bit of wartime nostalgia try Poppylands cafe in Horsey, or go and see the air museum close to Norwich airport. There are lots of little memorials to old air groups all over, and things like the Desert Rats memorial in Thetford forest. You can cycle or walk the old route from Norwich to Aylsham on the Marriotts Way, or the old M&GN route from Stalham to Aylsham on the Weavers Way.. The MNR doesn't have a lot to see unlike the NNR, only the station at Dereham but little else to look at apart from the ride. The lines from Norwich to Yarmouth are also quaint, well worth a ride. Norwich itself is one of my favourite cities, lots to do but not too prententious or overly busy. And it has 121 pubs.....plus a Dinosaur and Mammoth trail at the moment.

We only moved up here last year so we are trying all these things out. It's a great county, as is of course Cornwall......
