I've always said "every day's a learning day" where railways are concerned. Is the green D6580 authentic? I have never seen a photo of a green push/pull 33/1. Happy to be educated by any SR experts on here.

Hi Nev

It was the first 33/1 to be converted and wore this livery in 1965 (only).
All other 33/1s went straight to BR Blue with full yellow ends from 1966/67 when converted (retaining their same D65xx numbering until 1974).

Thanks Bob,
I guess, given it's short duration, photos are as rare as the proverbial hens teeth?
Cheers,
Nev

I'll be interested to see the actual livery specifications for the BR blue ones - specifically whether they've got the orange cantrail stripe or not. Vaguely regretting not buying the BR blue one (33 020) from the second run as my first two are superb runners, but then again two are enough. Really, they are.

Really? Are you a true southern modeller?

Well, Southern mostly as that's where I started my railway career, plus Eastern Region, as that's where I spent the majority of it! Stoneham Yard serves both Clapham Junction Yard and Peterborough Post Office Terminal (quite how is lost in the shifting sands of time). But given that my layout consists of four dead end sidings two class 33s might be considered enough!

What I'd really like is a class 09... which is a conversion I keep pondering... there are also four class 73s, if that's any consolation... and my (current) stock box is full...

My comment was a bit tongue in cheek, but good to know the Southern blood continues to flow.

Is there any external difference between an 08 and an 09? I thought it was just gearing.
I know some 03s (at Bournemouth) and 07s had high level MU connectors fitted, but I was not aware of any 09s so fitted.

It's mainly the need to fabricate high level air brake and main res pipes at both ends. I tend to agree that MU jumpers don't need come into the equation. In model terms it would be a case of replicating the pipework both ends (0.25mm brass rod?), fixing it securely (presumably as per the prototype!), painting it all and re-numbering. Technically not a huge job - additions rather than removals - but I'm nervous about spoiling a perfectly good 08 in the process. I think I just about got away with the weathering on my 03, but it's a slightly close run thing. With a weathered BR blue 08 on Farish's horizon I may be tempted.

But a box fresh class 33 (heading back on topic!) might tempt me instead...

If you have a green class 73 I seem to recall Bob wanted one after the latest run had sold out so maybe a swap could be made. After all 18 x class 33s is just pure overkill ;)

I don't think I said any of mine were spare...

And if they were Westerns or Warships I'm sure you'd be saying I didn't have enough. Well I love Cromptons too.

I love to drift off topic, but so far we had managed to keep it on southern diesel locomotives. Now you have introduced an LNER kettle to the discussion!   :offtopicsign:
Although to be fair it is still a Dapol product. So worth a cheezy grin.
