Might get a few comments around some of the photos used  ;) ;) ;)

However, as true today as it was 200 years ago.

Neal.

I agree, every time I see a photo of his stupid grinning face I want to throw up. :-[

Being a squaddie brat of a father who did 3 'tours' (as they were called) of NI in the 1970's I found that quite touching. The REME cap badges at the end made me go a bit tingly too as he was in the REME. RIP daddy Trainfish.

of course it was not just infantry who did tours, but other arms as well, acting in the infantry role.

IIRC mostly from BAOR, but I may be wrong.

I was posted there in early 68, first time I came across the 'B' specials, and then out in early 69, by which time Devlin and Paisley were stirring things up.

RUC and infantry based with us for duty in Derry.

I remember BAOR being mentioned a lot whilst living in Münster but as I was only 8 years old when we went there I don't really remember what it was all about. I just remember the change I saw in my father each time he returned. He was in Derry twice I think and Enniskillen at least once. He didn't like to talk about his time there too much as he saw some horrible things but I do know he felt helpless especially knowing he was supposed to read his yellow card before even thinking about doing anything to help himself. Thinking back on it it was horrific so I must stop thinking about it.  >:(

pretty well a case of both hands tied behind your back.

happens in a dark alley or back street, response required in seconds ...

justify your response in a court or court martial in bright sunshine years later to people who have never been in the situation.

basically, damned if you do, damned if you don't, depending on the political stance at the time of your trial  :censored:
