Will see how easy it is to swop 56 for 08 and snap picture.

So I thought I would resurrect this old "workbench" thread to record what I mange to get done in Lockdown.

Some of you may have seen these before on Facebook, but I have some more things planned and they will be recorded on here as well.

First project was this NGS Shark. This was almost 100% done in the Lockdown period and was my first ever NGS kit.

I loved making it and will almost certainly be getting another.

After that, I moved on to decorating these TPM (now NGS) PTA/JTA/JUA wagons.

Apart from some grey paint details, the majority of the work was applying Fox ARC decals (180 in total on the rake of 10).

Yes I need to look at improving the running (or at least touch the wagon wheel sets with oil), and I need to choose what wagons to add the ladders to. Any additional work needs to wait until I have suitable Matt varnish to seal the decals.

That all being said, this rake has been a long time (over two years) coming. Plus the couplings are more reliable than a lot of my RTR stuff on this Kato loop....

I have a couple of questions for the collective to finish:

1. How many of the rake ARC wagons should I apply the ladders to? Photos and videos of the takes at Westbury in the rough period I want to model (at the start of ARC use) suggests around half of them had ladders fitted.
2. What should I tackle next on the bench? I have 2x 1/144 aircraft kits, 2x rather nifty looking metal etched fold kits and a NGS Salmon wagon.

@Skyline2uk Nice job sir  :claphappy: very nice job. The only bad thing I can see in the pictures is that Grid

Each to their own.....

My OCD is satisfied as I have seen pictures of 56001 in these colours on these wagons.

However, if you take issue with the Grid, please join me in pushing Dapol to deliver their 59/1. It's only been 8 years

Only messing mate, I'm not a fan of the 56s that's what my point was. Only meant in light hearted fun.

As for pushing Dapol weve been waiting 10years for a WC/BOB so I feel your pain!!!!

Oh don't worry, I didn't take offence.

We are all different and it would be very dull if everyone liked the same diesels  :D

Funny enough, if you are waiting for the WC/BOB so am I, because I was told be Dapol that is in front of the 59 in the N gauge development list!

So I decided, after a workbench tidy, to begin another NGS kit last night.

Ok, I decided on this kit because it was on the top of the pile of stuff in my draw.
Ok, I say "begin", but I had already started with a dusting of primer and an experiment with yellow paint...

I want to build an air-braked version and think I have found a photo of an example in a livery I can re-produce. Essentially the wagon sides are all yellow, with the exception of a thin stripe along the bottom.

Will see if I am capable of producing a finish I am happy with.

So the Salmon has leapt (sorry) forward:

Decided to do a bit of painting before assembly. I figured the sides would be most fiddly to do once assembled, so using so Easter Egg packaging (meaning I had to eat the egg, such sacrifice for my art  :D):

Got the sides glued on ok, which was the bit I was fearing most:

And then it was onto the weights and air brake gubbins (I have chosen to model the wagon as seen from late 70s / early 80s). The weights were a very tight fit and needed to trim them slightly. This could have been something I did wrong with the sides.

On a positive note, the etched parts for the air pipes are excellent and robust enough for me to fold them without a problem. I was glad I gave them a dust of primer before starting assembly, made them easier to see:

Today I have added some of the extra truss supports and (not shown below), the handbrake wheel mounts.

I have decided I will now mask up ready to paint the underneath black. Coating the details should be easier without the final two trusses in place, so they will be glued on after.

I too have sacrificed (my waistline) to chocl-art.  Solidarity, brother

So as of today, the Salmon looks like this.

I am quite happy with the way the top deck looks. This was my first attempt at producing a "rusty steel" look. I figured I would try it as it only needs to look passable until I get the track panel load sorted.

Final paint step will be a thin band of engineers grey along the bottom of the solebar. This is sort of a reversed "Dutch" livery (in terms of band thickness), as shown on this prototype shot:

Then it's onto decals.

This afternoon I have added one sided worth of decals:

You may be able to make out the thin band of engineers grey along the sides. It wasn't fun to do and not sure I would bother in future. Still, it's close to prototype so at least I know that.

Other side, brake wheels and varnish left.

And apart from varnish, that's the Sturgeon finished.

Second NGS kit, as enjoyable as the Shark with different challenges. I recon the Salmon took less than half the time though.

Took the chance to compare the Salmon and Revolution Sturgeon. Coupling is spot on, but both a touch lower than the (Farish) 33.

Need another project!

Guess who's back, back again....

13 months or so of the delay since the last post is accounted for by the moving into and completing more urgent projects on, the new house.

With those done and the new train room set up (without having to share space with work / office stuff), I am delighted to be back to modelling.

As it happens, the first across the new bench is another rake of PTA/JTA/JUA wagons. In this case they are made up of kits found at the bottom of @Mirrlees draws (no, trust me, you don't want to go there) topped up where required with bits from the ever helpful NGS.

As requested, they are set to be finished in later Yeoman livery (when under CAIB ownership). Tonight I have just found out that this livery uses a different shade of grey to the originals. This later "Steel" grey matches much more closely to the supplied plastic so I am thinking some paint might not be required (which is good because I haven't got the the RAL code for it).

Feels really good to be back doing this.
