G'day Folks, I've got a few Peco KNR-50 Tank Wagon kits and am interested in making them into `near enough' bulk cement `tanks'/presflos. If Peco's NR-P74 Tank Wagon (type C), Rugby Cement is any guide it is essentially an appropriate coat of paint and decals. However if anyone has some suggestions to make them a bit closer to:

then they would be welcome. I am also very much aware that the chassis really doesn't up all that well, I can live with that.
Thanks in advance, Andrew G.

Sounds like a simple and cost-effective idea, Andrew, and welcome to the NGF!

Why not, that's what I did.  Paint them light grey, heavy weathering (I remember PCA's lined up in Northfleet looking very "used").  Mix the rake up and no one will notice.  It the bulk of the train that people notice more than its accuracy...  You do need to mix in a few Vee wagons as well..

Apart from the roof walkway, tank "skirt", chassis, underframe and suspension units being wrong...

I'm not even sure that the barrels are the same!

I'm all for bodging something but it seems like an awful lot of work for not much saving (by the time you have bought the kits, paint and transfers etc) when you can get much more accurate models.

Personally, I would try to work out what the Peco tank is actually supposed to represent (probably some form of TTA) and re-paint them into something suitable for the kit.

The really obvious thing on tank wagons is normally the roof walkways and the chassis/suspension units (the two PCAs you linked to have two different types of suspension - IIRC Gloucester Pedestal and ESC Pedestal - both of which scream out the differences from the Peco chassis).

Cheers, Mike

He did say 'near enough' ;)

I wouldn't notice differences in suspension if they hadn't been pointed out, so I say go ahead as long as you are happy with the result

We all notice different things - I wouldn't have necessarily noticed the different suspension units, but I would notice the difference between the old "leaf" style springs plus axle boxes and the pedestal suspension.

Near enough is entirely subjective...to some a Black 5 painted as a Jubilee might be near enough for some and as you say that is a personal decision, but that does not make it correct! I was just trying to give the OP some information on the differences and an alternative.

Why not do them up as these ones:

They are almost like normal tank wagons and even have leaf spring suspension and catwalks.
The most obvious difference is the big pipe at one end (plastic rod?)

G'day Folks, Thanks for the input and suggestions, they are all appreciated. The reason for the post is that I have about 4 or 5 of the KNR-50's stored away and I want to use them on an industrial/goods shunting layout I am building. I thought about a fuel distributor but came to the conclusion that a cement distributor or concrete products producer would be a viable option. The concrete products producer would also allow for some outwards loadings.
Bernard TPM's suggestion fits the bill, including the small number of prototypes! I will try to post my efforts when I get to work on them.
Thanks again, Andrew G.
