I also think people should remember that we have so far played 2 of the better teams who were ranked 6th and 9th in the world before the competition started. We were ranked 10th by the way. Then, Costa Rica (started 34th, now 28th) have beaten both of them too so it won't be an easy ride on Tuesday either! Add to that the fact that a lot of youngsters are out there for us without the experience and it's not all bad. I'd much rather we try out the youngsters both now and in 2 years time (if we qualify) so we can hopefully have a more settled time in the future. It's either that or we continue to settle for progression to the quarter-finals in every competition and settle for mediocrity. Unfortunately and as usual the negativity from some people far outweighs people like myself who can always see their glass being half full rather than half empty. It is unfortunately a typical British thing to knock success and indeed encourage and enjoy failure. I have never been able to get my head around this and doubt I ever will do.
Let's all try to change the way we carry on and actually get behind our teams (not just footballers) and encourage them. I already do this whether it's football (a game I enjoy), rugby (a game I only watch if England are playing), cricket (again a big game watcher) or anything else where England are competing. I'd like to think the press/media could do the same but I'm unable to perform miracles and I don't want to sell papers either.
Come on England!

I do get behind my team - but they've got to earn my support. We have picked 22 players from what is the best league in the world (and yes I believe it is) and we cannot progress past the first stage.

I don't enjoy their failure, but I'm pretty indifferent to it these days.

Wish I could share your optimism for the sport WE invented Trainfish  :D

The premier league may well be the best in the world.....but the best players are not English and that is the key..not enough British players are first choice at their club so England will continue to struggle

Agree with you 100% Sparky, hence why I made the point. Those English players that are there (few as they might be), are in the company of the best in the world, and wouldn't be there if they weren't also some of the best in the world. I believe we have some exceptional individual players, but as a team ... ?

Now, do I think the lack of English players in the Premiership presents the FA with a conundrum? Absolutely! Unfortunately their hands are tied. I believe under EU law they will never be able to put a cap on this (unless an exception is made for football EU wide).

We had five on field players for Liverpool in the line-up. One of the best teams in the best league in the world. The other team had one Liverpool player  :laughabovepost:

I take the whole thing quite lightheartedly, and I think most people do - hence the misconception that some think "the nation are against them". I'll remain that way until I see some real progress (evidently I did think it was there in the first game against Italy, but sadly lacking in the second game).

As TrainFish said though, we do have promising youngsters in the team so there is potential.

Some very good points in the above discussion, and it makes me realise just what a good performance the Aussies put in over their two games. Sure, they're coming home, but so are England, and I honestly think the Aussies made a better go of it. The media here think so too.

But, as I say, some relevant issues brought up here.

Let's not kid ourselves , England are utter crap. Despite all the "Just one goal stuff".
If they get a point against Costa Rica they'll be doing well. In 4 years time this
post will be repeated.   Along with moans about Dapol locos!

So you'll be starting less than 11th on the grid for this afternoon's Austrian GP then :-X
At least F1 is a sport that regularly provides a UK world champion.
Sorry ............... :offtopicsign:

Cycling, equestrian, rowing regularly provide UK world champions too  ;) Problem with football is the media hyping up young players to be the next best thing since Pele - no wonder they can't live up to the expectation.
