I have placed an advanced order for a set of  8 Kato/lLemke n gauge orient express coaches. Any ideas about which steam loco would be the best choice also will the coupling differ between models?

If it is the Kato set, then it is the consist that visited Japan in the late 1980s.

A nice C62 would be in order here!  ;)

Thanks for the response, yes that's is the set I have on pre-order from Germany. There is another 7 part set which completes but no space for all  :(  I have looked at the C62 several times cannot recall if I have actually found one for sale except from Japan maybe. Does anyone have experience with this loco.

Yes, I have a Kato C62. They are impressive beasts, with excellent haulage capacity - mine handles a 13-coach set with ease; managing this heavy train on our former layout's 1/40 gradient.

In terms of availability; there are a couple of Tokaido line examples available here:

That sounds good to me many thanks

Yes, 9 times out of 10, if your purchase exceeds about £15.00, you will be hit with VAT and the dreaded Parcelfarce 'handling fee'. Sadly unavoidable, but par for the course when getting stuff otherwise unavailable in the UK/Europe.

Silver Line

Thanks I thought that might be the case.  :'(

Thank Nick I have ordered the 8 car set from them. As my layout is "Small" I didn't think the 15 coach would work. The loco might catch its own tail if you get my drift  :) The C62 has arrived just one niggle there was a very small plastic part loose in the box a bit like tubes. There are two studs on the back so it must fit in somewhere but I have been over the loco with a magnifier and cannot see where it has come off from.I cannot see it listed in any parts either.

Also can someone tell me why on the instructions there are left right arrows for the smoke funnel. I think I need to learn Japanese !!

..the new set has not japanese trucks...has the european PP and M4P trucks...so you can pull it not necessarily by the jap C62....

Which series of C62 did you buy? The 2017 or the 2019?

The loose part may be one of those pipes under the foot plate.

The smoke funnel acts as a light switch that turns on/off the head light for multiple heading.

May I suggest to use the following locomotive. The D51-498 form Kato 2016 series. (not the round house 2006 series)

All-

After a lot of head-scratching, I think I've figured out the 'story' when it comes to the five (yes, five) sets of Orient Express (NIOE) cars produced by Kato since 2008. To catch up on the prototype for these sets, visit http://blainestrains.org/pdfs/KatoOE_setReview.pdf:

Sets 10-561 (five OE cars plus the Japanese head and tail cars) and 10-562 (six OE cars), released in Japan in 2008, are representative of the 1988 train as it circulated in Japan. The trucks are a Japanese style that resembles the 'Type P' trucks that were a standard in Europe.
Sets 10-1230 (eight OE cars) and 10-1231 (seven OE cars), released last month in Japan, include (AFAIK) all of the OE cars from the 1988 train. The trucks on these models are the Type Ps (though I seem to recall that at least one of the real cars had already been converted to a newer style - Minden-Deutz or Fiat). The carrying case covers bear the English "Paris to Hong Kong" which goes along with the European trucks.
A 15 car set exists carrying the number '23215' and includes all of the cars in the 10-1230 & 10-1231 sets. This is Lemke's (of Germany) catalog number, also released last month in Europe (and through Statside retailers of European models.
BTW, none of these cars have NEM pockets or close coupling mechanisms.

Not surprisingly, the Lemke set is listed at a price almost twice that of the pair of Kato sets (€498 ($680!) vs. $360). The only problem is that the Japanese market sets are already out of stock at many online retailers. I guess those guys need their 34-hour work weeks and 30 day vacations!!
