which wagons do i need to buy?

which containers would be suitable?

i only have one g/f wagon currently with oocl and ford containers on it.

are safmarine, maersk, p&o nedlloyd and msc yellow ones too modern?

motive power will be a blue 47 or 37. train length will be about 9 63ft wagons...

cheers

Mine is meant to be very late 80s into early 90s and I have a mixture of early (Poole) Farish conflats with the old type (flat top) containers - Ford, OOCL, Zanussi, etc - and the later China-built ones with the ISO containers you mention - P&O, Maersk, etc.

According to what I've read there were mixed trains of flat-top and ISO containers still running into the 80s until gradually all old-type boxes were replaced. Freightliner containers themselves went from the grey box with red stripe to grey with red triangle in the late 80s

i can always take off any containers in too modern a livery and leave a few empty spaces in the train...

is it best to just buy farish (poole and china) and avoid lima and minitrix????

You have the right wagons (FFA/FGA), although the Farish ones are somewhat inaccurate.

Originally they ran in fixed sets, usually of five, with buffers at the end of each set of five. They got shorter and shorter into the 1980s as some of the wagons were condemned so a 4 and a 5 would be quite reasonable.

The conversion parts to make the buffered ends, replacement smaller sized wheels and the like are available if you are so inclined. If you are into building etched kits then Worsley Works do a far superior etched kit for these wagons.

There were other wagons newly introduced in the late 1980s including the KFA (introduced 1989) and the first IFA wagons in the early 1990s as well as the FSA and FTA wagons and the FLA. None of these would bridge your entire period however and not all are available in N either.

I would in general avoid anything Lima N scale except for the Mark 1 CCT and the Bogie Siphon. Most Lima models were wildly inaccurate and not always great runners either.

cheers alan very interesting and useful info!

i may change the wheels and add end buffers to the end of fixed formations then at some stage...

best wishes,

Dr Al

The Farish models run on generic bogies and larger than are accurate diameter wheels.

If you are going for a fully detailed rake then ATM do bogies and 5.1mm diameter wheels to upgrade the sets.

Hi

I'm sure that price is for a pair of bogies.

Hi Tim

The price is per pair.  And you can stagger the cost by buying the mouldings only, and using the wheels from your donor wagons (though the diameter is slightly too large)

cheers guys good to know it is per pair

i emailed n train to ask if he can supply these bogies

as an aside, does anyone make replacement bogies with nem sockets for mk1 or mk2 coaches?

MJKERR

I have several of the TEA / container wagon bogies spare, I would need to check how many are in my spares box

The BR1 and B4 bogies are only available in standard or split versions
The standard version has the mounting point for the spring and coupling
The split version is the bogie only, the NEM pocket is mounted on the coach itself (and so far only the BR1 and Commonwealth bogies have been released)
Therefore bogies cannot be swapped between older versions and Blue Riband versions

That is the older one-piece bogie and coupling socket
The latest is the bogie only
