Not trying to be clever here but I think it would be great if everyone put their "first or nick name" into their signature, I think it helps to make this great forum just a wee bit more personal and friendly.

In the old days before computers and email people used to sign letters with their name so that the person reading it knew who it was from (Genius) it seems that these days we have to call people by a crazy username that half the time means bugger all to the person reading the thread.

Just a thought  ???

I've always put my first name at the end of posts on any forum I been on and don't have a problem with that at all.

I initially had my name in my signature but the majority of replies I received were addressed to scotsoft.
This only changed when I removed my name from my signature and started to add it to the end of each post.

Using their own name is something not every member may be comfortable doing, hence the choice to use a nickname or username.

I always sign my name at the end and this is the only forum I use where my username isn't my real name (not sure why I did that). I don't like 'nicknames' as you have no idea who you are talking to and it allows people to hide their own identity and makes it easier for them to perhaps not be as polite as they would if they had to say who they were.

I guess it depends on many things as to how people sign off but I do know that some forums stipulate that you must use your full name which I think is wrong, others request that members use their first name when signing their threads to make it easier for others to reply, to each his/her own I guess but in some cases I wont even bother replying to threads that end with nothing at all.

It is all a matter of personal taste...

Whilst I use my 'user name' and don't have my real name in my signature, I always sign off personal messages or emails with my real name. Some who like to cause mischief can hide behind user names, but for me it is not having my name plastered across the internet; not that it would too much detective work finding it out.

Thanks...

Two rails good. Three better.

Can't see the problem with just a first name, what can people find out just using that?

What's annoying me at the moment is every time I sign into Youtube I get pestered to use my full real name instead of my username - every single time!  :veryangry:

I am an old fashioned so and so and don't go for all this modern stuff like Facebook, Twitter etc. and only use Youtube from other links. This is the only forum I am a member of now (I was previously in a Timeshare forum but was glad to get out of that lot) and that is only because I desperately need to acquire a knowledge of how to do things in N Gauge. I always prefer to address people by their name and hate nicknames as it can hide a lot. I had to struggle to think of a nickname when I joined up. I have added my first name as a signature but then always tend to put it in again out of habit.

There are some of us with a name that when googled, 192 returns 6 occurrences for Anthony and 3 occurrences for Tony, when you have a surname of Windmill.
But as this is such a friendly group.

Best wishes Tony Windmill
