Well the new Doctor has been announced (Peter Capaldi) and we all eagerly await there dramatic debut!
Had a wild thought to include a police box (Tardis) in my layout!
What a tedious pile of luvvievision at its steaming worst.
As ever the doctor can be anything ... so long as its white male and british ;-)
My money was on Bruce Willis to get the part... :(
I had Jimmy Carr at 300-1.

Would be a great "easter egg"!
Peter Capaldi is a great character actor and a superb choice for the new Doc. I was a bit worried that they were getting younger and younger, we'd end up with a foetus for the next one. :) I'm getting old and grumpy.
In the recent Brad Pitt zombiefest, World War Z, Capaldi portrayed a doctor working for the World Health Organisation - a WHO Doctor!
Damn you mean I didn't get the part :(
You might not realise it to look at him, but Peter Capaldi is the same age as William Hartnell was when he became the Doctor. 55 certainly isn't what it used to be (although in his defence, Billie did wear a wig to make him look older).

I saw part of it being filmed in Glasgow's George Square, made to look like
a US city with police cars , taxis etc. Dozens of clowns in yellow vests trying
to move onlookers along from public pavements, met with remarks like
I've paid my ******** council tax mate , I'll stand where I want..
On a railway note,Brad Pitt and his family arrived in Glasgow Central
station by private train. From the crowds there you'd have thought
Jesus Christ had returned.

Argh.... Over done cliche no 10045....
Boy, there are some real killjoys on this thread! If you don't like the show and don't care about the actors, then don't comment. But do try and accept that some people do like the show, and for them, this is news. I couldn't care less about football, real ale or ballet, but I don't mind other people enjoying them and talking about them. I dare say a few of us have friends who think our interest in trains is a bit nutty, let alone the desire to spend hundreds of pounds buying toy trains instead of spending the money on something more useful or trendy.
As for cliches, well, practically everything we do in railway modelling is about evoking the cliche rather than creating something new. GWR branch lines, modern image traction maintenance depots, happy cows in green fields along railway lines... all cliches. Hardly any of us work on the modern railway, let alone have experience of the pre-nationalisation railways, so what we strive to create is something based on photos in books or visits to preserved railways, so again, we tend to model the cliches rather than the reality.
Cheers, NeMo

There is. It's called Torchwood, although the chances of seeing the Doctor in it have diminished massively since it started, sadly.
I think this thread is going off the rails a bit (pun intended), a simple remark about that splendid
thespian (or in west of Scotland parlance auld jessie) Peter Capaldi has members foaming
at the mouth. (Modellers would be polystyrene foaming at the mouth).
Nemo mentioned cliched modelling , going back to the past instead of modelling reality, so why not model a FGW train stuck for 5-6 hours with blocked bogs. You wouldn't have to bother about DC
or DCC or power or track connections, just sit and watch it do nothing. :D
Ah, the perfect subject for a diorama perhaps! With a bit of hydrogen sulphide, you could even add the odours!
Cheers, NeMo
(PS. For those with knowledge of HSTs, the smell of their brakes always seemed very distinctive to me when I travelled on them a lot during the 80s and 90s... any particular reason for their unique smell?)

(I really shouldn't laugh. That's going to be 'my' main line pretty soon, so as the Lottery advert says, 'It could be you!' :worried: )

It just so happens i'm possibly the only qualified HST fitter on the forum and i can tell you that the smell is the brake pads (just like the ones in your car) getting really hot as they slow the 500+ Ton train down. This is quite normal and the pads last about a week depending on use and are inspected EVERY day (known as a FPX exam).
Back on topic, I'm looking forward to seeing the new doctor in action, but i really wish torchwood would make a comeback, i really enjoyed the way they pushed the stories further than the kid friendly Dr Who. (by the way TORCHWOOD is an anagram of DOCTOR WHO if you didn't already know...). ;)
Thanks for the explanation re: HSTs. Make sense. But why did these trains smell like that, but not other trains of the era? Were the brake pads on the HSTs different? Perhaps a dumb question: like you say, this is a very big, very fast train so must have been a bit special in terms of brakes!
I liked some of the Torchwood episodes, and the feature-length one where children are being harvested by aliens had me gripped. But the UK/US one wasn't that good. The central idea was great -- what would happen if people stopped dying, no matter their injuries or sickness -- but the idea was stretched far too thin to be entertaining, and the ending made no sense at all.
I guess one problem for Torchwood writers is that anything really serious should, logically, attract the attention of the Doctor; but anything small enough not to attract his attention might not be sufficiently dramatic to capture the viewers.
Cheers, NeMo

Unfortunately their franchise got extended in the great franchising fiasco. They were actually quite good at one point but are now so dire people take the coach instead or travel other routes out of South Wales (Arriva to Manchester then change, or Cross Country to Birmingham)

HST's were the only trains using that type of brake pad at the time, normal train brakes use shoes which are made of soft metal and generally don't smell. The braking forces of a HST were hard on the pads and it took a while to find the right compound for the price (80 pads per Western region rake !). To my mind it smells more like a clutch burning rather than brake pads, but that's down to the compound.
The UK/US Torchwood started out great, but like you said it fizzled out towards the end - i got the impression they wanted to end it quickly, maybe their budget wasn't as big as the story ?

They do sound pretty bad to the north of Bristol, but I've been using them off and on for about ten months to travel to Somerset and Cornwall, and the only trouble I've had is when people were playing 'dodge the train' on level crossings (results: Trains 2-0 People, and sizeable delays). Perhaps the services into Wales will improve with the advent of electrification, although the same operator will still be in place, of course.
Getting back on topic, I think Peter Capaldi is a great choice.
An older doctor hasn't been done for a while so will make a nice change.
He's the 2nd Scottish actor to play the doctor, so they don't have to be English as someone said earlier! :P
Plus, he's the first doctor with a quiff! :D
As a life long DW fan, since the Tom Baker days anyway, I eagerly await his debut! :)
I was at work when the program was on. I got a random text message from my wife saying "Peter Capaldi"
I sent text back saying "who"
I got one back saying "yes"

But have you seen him as Rasputin?
Why are Cyber men so pants?
They are not very scary and move at the same speed as snails.
Daleks are creepy, and those angel things that come after you when you dont look at them scare me rigid. Cyber men though, just tin cans and the worst DW baddies ever!
I'd forgotten about 'the Angels' ! They are genuinely scary... Not bad for a pre watershed program.

Neil Gaiman has gone on record to say the role for Doctor 12 was originally offered to a black actor, who turned it down. One in the eye for all those "middle-aged white guy" moaners! :)
I go back to the very first DW with William Hartnell shown in stunning 405 line B&W definition.
My favourite was Patrick Troughton (Doc No 2) although Tom Baker did make an impression!
Still watch and enjoy it and am looking forward to the new series. It will be interesting to see how the Doc's personality changes.

DW started for me with Jon Pertwee and ended when Tom Baker left. Never did find it scary even then and just lost interest after that, haven't watched it since :D

Brilliant sci-fi fun on a tiny budget. Excellent use of cheap materials.
At least the scenery didn't move (e.g. huge boulders) as it often did when Cap'n Kirk got in yet another human to alien brawl!

Avon was always a favourite of mine...did he die or not I seem to remember was a big cliff-hanger!
I remember watching the very first episode back in the dim and distant 60's, I seem to remember that the first show went off about halfway through for some reason and the following Saturday they showed it again immediately followed by episode 2. It was ground breaking television for kids at the time, we had never seen anything like it and was a huge success, especially the Daleks. I must admit I have not watched if for many years, but still pleased it is still running.

He was still alive standing astride Blakes dead body as the screen went black to the sound of gunfire at the end of the last episode. In 'Afterlife', the book that followed this episode, both Avon and Villa were alive and kicking.
