I hope he's going to be playing the Dr with the persona of Malcom Tucker - I don't think that the Daleks et al will stand a chance - "Exterminate, Exerterminate? Is that the best you can do? You Daleks can #@!!@&´#%§....."

I'm sure there is a room for a post-watershed DW special!

There is. It's called Torchwood, although the chances of seeing the Doctor in it have diminished massively since it started, sadly.

I think this thread is going off the rails a bit (pun intended), a simple  remark about that splendid
thespian (or in west of Scotland parlance auld jessie) Peter Capaldi has members foaming
at the mouth. (Modellers would be polystyrene foaming at the mouth).

Nemo mentioned cliched modelling , going back to the past instead of modelling reality, so why not model a FGW train stuck for 5-6 hours with blocked bogs. You wouldn't have to bother about DC
or DCC or power or  track connections, just sit and watch it do nothing. :D

Ah, the perfect subject for a diorama perhaps! With a bit of hydrogen sulphide, you could even add the odours!

Cheers, NeMo

(PS. For those with knowledge of HSTs, the smell of their brakes always seemed very distinctive to me when I travelled on them a lot during the 80s and 90s... any particular reason for their unique smell?)

I did consider this briefly but had nothing to go on

A while back someone had a layout called Seaton Dunny.
A sort of bog standard oval . :D

Neither did the HST's passengers for about five hours   :laughabovepost:

(I really shouldn't laugh. That's going to be 'my' main line pretty soon, so as the Lottery advert says, 'It could be you!'  :worried: )

It just so happens i'm possibly the only qualified HST fitter on the forum and i can tell you that the smell is the brake pads (just like the ones in your car) getting really hot as they slow the 500+ Ton train down. This is quite normal and the pads last about a week depending on use and are inspected EVERY day (known as a FPX exam).

Back on topic, I'm looking forward to seeing the new doctor in action, but i really wish torchwood would make a comeback, i really enjoyed the way they pushed the stories further than the kid friendly Dr Who. (by the way TORCHWOOD is an anagram of DOCTOR WHO if you didn't already know...).  ;)

Thanks for the explanation re: HSTs. Make sense. But why did these trains smell like that, but not other trains of the era? Were the brake pads on the HSTs different? Perhaps a dumb question: like you say, this is a very big, very fast train so must have been a bit special in terms of brakes!

I liked some of the Torchwood episodes, and the feature-length one where children are being harvested by aliens had me gripped. But the UK/US one wasn't that good. The central idea was great -- what would happen if people stopped dying, no matter their injuries or sickness -- but the idea was stretched far too thin to be entertaining, and the ending made no sense at all.

I guess one problem for Torchwood writers is that anything really serious should, logically, attract the attention of the Doctor; but anything small enough not to attract his attention might not be sufficiently dramatic to capture the viewers.

Unfortunately their franchise got extended in the great franchising fiasco. They were actually quite good at one point but are now so dire people take the coach instead or travel other routes out of South Wales (Arriva to Manchester then change, or Cross Country to Birmingham)

HST's were the only trains using that type of brake pad at the time, normal train brakes use shoes which are made of soft metal and generally don't smell. The braking forces of a HST were hard on the pads and it took a while to find the right compound for the price (80 pads per Western region rake !). To my mind it smells more like a clutch burning rather than brake pads, but that's down to the compound.

The UK/US Torchwood started out great, but like you said it fizzled out towards the end - i got the impression they wanted to end it quickly, maybe their budget wasn't as big as the story ?

They do sound pretty bad to the north of Bristol, but I've been using them off and on for about ten months to travel to Somerset and Cornwall, and the only trouble I've had is when people were playing 'dodge the train' on level crossings (results: Trains 2-0 People, and sizeable delays). Perhaps the services into Wales will improve with the advent of electrification, although the same operator will still be in place, of course.
