No, the NGF can't afford to do that! ;D

I was watching the TV just now whilst making the morning coffees, when a company was advertising the fact that they can help smaller businesses advertise on the TV.

So, my thoughts were... Do you think that if the model railway manufacturers advertised on TV, that they'd get a lot more people buying their products?  I'm sure that showing Hornby 00 trains on the children's channels on Sky would be a winner, and perhaps as the kids turn into 'adult modellers' then they can change to n gauge.

I have fond memories as a boy of the Yellow Pages advert and the young boy buying the signal box for his dad.  What a great loft layout that was!  So, if I was excited about that, surely others would have been......yet there are no adverts?!!  Surely the odd TV advert showing a moving and working layout is far more exciting than a poster.

Just my early morning thoughts....  Now for breakfast.....   :foodanddrink:

Quickest way in history to force Mortgagee Sales when the parents run out of money having spent it all on trains for the kids (AHEM), cough, sorry, themselves...  :P

Oh, and whats with this Morning Coffee business? I'm rapidly contemplating going to bed!

If memory serves me right, Hornby did advertise on TV in the 1980s. Certainly I remember a 00 HST hurtling around a large layout, along with 58s etc. It may have even been as late as the 1990s.

I do remember the Hornby adverts as well (just!).  I wonder what the results of that campaign were?  Maybe they weren't successful?

A quick Google shows plenty on YouTube ... including those with Bernard Cribbins !

I'd forgotten some of them, & a bunch were new to me too ...

I'm surprised they don't advertise hornby train and scalexctric together on the telly, especially with festive skint season coming up!!!!!!

There have been model railway adverts and adverts (for other products) featuring model railways on TV on a fairly regular basis. The big issues with TV ads beyond their cost is that in general they are used for building brand awareness rather than creating sales leads. To do that you need a different type of approach such as DRTV.

I can agree with brand awareness on the more popular channels, but on children's channels it's certainly about selling a certain type of product rather than just the brand - in the child's eyes.

I think the only tv ad Ive seen on TV was the NXEC (or was it just east coast) advert with the repainted HST and the hornby figures in the 2? years they 'had' the ECML

However I did see the hornby advert with the yellow pages and the lad buying his father the signal box on youtube, posted it on here somewhere actually haha, was a great advert.
OK who took my cake?

Not really - TV adverts are not 'selling' to children. They aim to build a brand(name) awareness and product desire in the child who then badgers their parents to go and buy it for them, especially big ticket goods. It's the parent who does the buying but in general the adverts are not targetted at them.
