Is it only me ?

I haven't even got any scenery down yet or a backscene, but I keep getting the urge to download more Scalescenes things. At the moment I can't decide whether to download the country pub,the half relief high street shops and cinema sets, the single engine shed, the new house backs etc.etc.
I've got loads of things ready to print and cut but keep wanting to download another building and get it ready to print and cut.

I'm just starting to make my platforms but if I run true to form I know I'll have to make them twice after making a 'male chicken' (changed by forum) up of the first one.
My Scalescenes folder is nearly 14 gigabits already what with all the reworks and cutting templates.

A couple of days or so ago I finally managed to get all my track down and tested, even managed to get the turntable wired correctly. It's taken me all this year and some of last year because I keep getting sidetracked into making buildings.

I certainly don't think it is just you Allan, I may not get sidetracked by buildings but I do get sidetracked when I see an idea then spend ages sketching my version of that idea out and at the end of the day have nothing to show for the time apart from another chunk out of a rain forest due to the paper I have used  :help:

cheers John.

Ah but you haven't wasted the design bits - rip them into strips and use the spare designs and failed buildings to make the hills!

It seems we have a lot of members coming down with viruses today...

And now Alan has come down with Scalescenedownloadatosis.
The forum will have to be put into quarantine the way things are going....... :worried:

Alan,

It is NOT a disease, It's an addiction, luckily I don't suffer from it as these pictures will prove.

Avoid the house backs though. Started them a few months back got to the stage where I hated the construction so much I had to go and download the oil tanks and then build another metre or so of retaining walls / arches.
Some days its just not worth gnawing through the straps.

You've now deeply hurt my feelings, you've got loads more than me,but I've got a wheighbridge and a water tower so there! :P

But did you build the coal stages to go with your Why Eye bridge (bad p taking geordie impression.  :P
If you look at the factory right on the factory roof I have used the water tower there  :nerner:

Now I am being compelled by the inner force to complete a full size department store ..... :help: :help: :help: :help:

Nice to see so many Scalescenes models getting built which has encouraged me to try one of the freebys, we pay up to $18 for a Metcalf kit over here.

Any hints or tips would be very much appreciated from you lads that know what you are doing  :help:

Hi Dave,

The recommended card thickness for N gauge are too thin IMHO and I always use half the recommended 00 gauge thickness.
So for me it's....1mm for heavy card, 0.5mm for medium card and 160gsm for light card.

If you have a look round the Scalescenes site you'll see a fine tip glue dispenser recommended,my advice would be to get one, they're not dear and make gluing parts together easier,I bought two and some spare nozzle pins.

I use Gorilla wood glue mainly, but any PVA will do,sometimes use some UHU solvent free where necessary but squeeze it out onto a tin lid and apply it with a cocktail stick.
A wallpaper seam roller to go over things that are being stuck together helps to stop a lot of curling, especially if some pressure is applied.

RMWEB site has a section just for card modelling and you'll find loads of tips there.

Thanks for the tips and the link Allan its much appreciated, I have only ever assembled Superquick kits when I was into OO gauge and liked the look of the finished kits, will see if I can get your suggested card over here and make a start.

Hi Dave,

I laminate different card thicknesses together to get what I want.
220gsm plus 160gsm makes 0.5mm card near as damn it,double that for 1mm card.
I use 3M permanent spray mount for laminating A4 sheets together.

Thanks for that Allan, I hope you don't mind but I copied your specs to Libre Office so I can use it as reference.

Try the low relief warehouse first. It is a nice model and not at all fiddly.
Living in Italy its not so easy to acquire materials so I use 1mm card for the Heavy card (bought from an art shop) and 200 gsm card for medium as it can be found in packs in the schools section of our supermarket. For light paper I just use normal computer paper.
To glue I don't use the "pritt stick" as the local stuff unglues as soon as you put it down. So any runny glue is good. To join pieces together I use a PVA glue.

If you have ink / paper to spare you can try printing it twice once on to plain paper and once onto what is described as medium card the 200 gsm card will fit through the printer (well it does fit mine).

Good luck but watch out its addictive (allegedly  :bounce: :bounce:

Thanks Jerry, I am able to get 1mm card from a local Newsagent and for building I used to use Sticky Craft Glue but I am interested in doing a bit of experimenting with glues.

I cant see myself getting addicted to card kits as I already have nearly a third of my buildings but I am looking forward to doing my first Scalescenes model.
