Silly question time, does it matter which way round the GWR toad vans are on the train, ie the veranda facing outwards or inwards. or does it not matter at all.

Seem to remember always seeing them with the verandah at the back.

Hi,

I've just had a look in Great Western Branch Line Album by Ian Krause and found a few pictures of goods trains with GW Toad brake vans with the veranda pointing either way. One photo is of a short train with two Toads, one at each end of the string of wagons, and both with the veranda pointing forwards.

Also, specifically on a branch line, unless there was a turntable some where there is no provision to turn any thing, loco or toad so I guess you can run them either way round, at least on a branch with no turning facilities.

Hope this helps

Regards

Frank

I would have thought the veranda would have to point to the rear otherwise the train would block all the lovely views along the route :-\. Cheers john.

Generally, on the main line with the verandah facing to the rear but on branch lines could be either way.
I believe it wasn't unheard of to have a van at either end of a rake of waggons so that the whole train could run in either direction.
Also sometimes one or more van could be marshalled in the middle of a train for when rakes of waggons were split at various points along the line.
I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.

reason i ask is becasue i want to put a flashing red light on to identify end of train, and its easier with the cabin at the back so i can hide the wiring etc easier. but at the same time i want it to be correct. ie if the veranda was facing away from the train.

Flashing red? Is the wick in the parafin lamp a bit duff?!

The lamps wouldn't normally be lit in daytime anyway, though you'll need to fit sidelights as well.

Think if I was a guard I'd be a bit miffed if I walked out onto the verandah for tiffin and all I could see was the backside of a tippler wagon or the like :(
