hi

has anyone re-engined a dapol class 56?

no i dont want to create a class 69 before anyone makes this joke!

i just find mine unbearably slow despite trying various things over the years (decoders, higher track voltage, clean up and re-oil).  i realise they should run slow but mine are painfully slow!

just wondered if a new motor was worth trying?

if yes can anyone suggest a suitable replacement motor?

cheers

If you want a coreless motor there are options available from the tramfabriek website which do kits for some dapol models,
There is also DCC supplies which sell dapol spares but this is in the process of
passing its spares over but contact them and I am sure they will but you in touch ,

Speed is down to the gearing - both the 56 and 58 are much lower geared than others. Exactly the same motor is used on the 86 and HST which have much higher top speed. The low speed is good if you want to replicate MGR train creeps through their unloading process.

What you should do is overhaul the existing motor - it could be it's even slower than normal due to clogged commutator (not uncommon on these - they should run on less than 100mA - if higher it's quite possible this is the case). While out of the chassis, you can give the motor a half hour blast at full power in each direction - this tends to free up and accelerate bedding in of these motors.

They will always run slower than others, but the top speed of one in good order is prototypical, so shouldn't need a motor change.

Cheers,
Alan

thanks dr al and sparrow for the replies

i dont feel confident to dismantle and unclog the commutator but I'll maybe ask a repair service to do this.

i am very adept at taking things apart (not just model trains) but my record at reassembling things to working order is very poor.
