I've some shops to populate, and I'd like to do a butchers shop. Has anyone got any, sensible, ideas on what I can use for the front window display?
Happy to have hanging rabbits, geese, chooks etc..

Failing that, stuff for a bakers shop.

What time period do you envisage as the window displays changed, as I recall, over time?

Best wishes.

The Table-Top Railway is an attempt to create, in British 'N' gauge,  a 'semi-scenic' railway in the old-fashioned style, reminiscent of the layouts of the 1930s to the 1950s.

That's a very good point. Sort of mid 40's, through to mid 50's I guess.

Lots of posters on the inside about having your ration cards ready and "horse flesh available" signs as meat was rationed in the UK until 1954.

Hmm. I was thinking more of items in the shop window, stuff in the window. It's N gauge, you ain't gonna see beyond about 10mm in through the window.

Don't forget to keep the Special Stuff under the counter

You've been living in Royston Vasey for too long :worried:

I hope this is a local shop for local people.

Thank you very much for that.

Meat and bacon finally came off the ration in 1954.  For your period it was a scarce commodity and supply was severely restricted.

I suggest the window would be quite bare with a few sausages, black puddings and packets of beef dripping on display.  Hanging up behind the window would be parts of carcasses - fore ends, rump popes-eyes and the like.  A couple of pigs and lambs as well.  The amount would be governed by the day of the week and how many ration books the butcher got coupons from.

By the late 'fifties and early 'sixties the amount on display would have been a great deal more - I can remember butchers' shops being festooned with hanging carcasses.

Ready-cut steaks and piles of mince (with lots of sulphur dioxide therein) are for a later era.  Steaks would normally be cut for the customer and mince made fresh.

At the end of the week you might see some pies in the window - these were normally a collaborative effort between the butcher and a local baker.

If you are modelling summer time, please remember the awning which would be wound out to protect the window display from the sun!

With all best wishes.

It may however be a bit too modern ?
