Like PLD, I feel pretty sure that despite announcing the J72, both Dapol and Farish later said that they would not continue.

I hope I'm wrong.........

Other LNER tanks can be made from kits, but some are dated, and not really suitable for 'branch line' operation.

I can think of these kits, there may be more;

N7 Langley kit, dated.

N2 Langley kit, dated; also available as a 3D print from Shapeways on a Farish 3MTT chassis. I built one last year,

However, the N7s never worked in Yorkshire, and the N2s were mainly used on ex Great Northern services for services from the bigger cities in Yorkshire.

J50; Shapeways body, Farish chassis; used mainly on shunting or freight duties, but also did some passenger work in Yorkshire.

J52; can't remember who made it, uses a Farish chassis.

As has been said, your best friend will be Union Mills, the J25 0-6-0, and, currently only second hand, the D20 4-4-0;  or the Farish or Union Mills J39, though this was a bit 'big' for many branches.

In theory, BH Enterprises make a G5 0-4-4 tank kit, and also a long boiler loco; I'm not sure if the shop is open due to the owner's illness.

Langley Models also make a steam railcar; these just lasted into the early years of World War 2;

Another tank engine kit is for the A5 by Graham Hughes. This kit is, however, long out of production and any examples that come for sale are expensive. It was also a bit big for many branch lines but did work from Darlington to Whitby and Scarborough, amongst other places.

By being a bit flexible with dates, the LNER bought a number of industrial design locos which had seen service with the Army, during World War 2 and were designated J94. This is no longer in production by Farish but they frequently appear for sale second hand. They had no train brakes and were therefore used as shunter's or freight, but many that have been preserved have had train brakes added. So you could push reality and say that the LNER bought some before or during World War 2 and added the brakes. It would be entirely up to you if you can accept this bending of facts.

Thanks Martyn!
The bending of truths is sometimes all we can do when making something fictional. If the loco existed before 1940, anything is possible really. Making up a plausible story, based on things that happened elsewhere, can make it easier to find something that fits.
Shapeways is a great resource when kits are unavailable, but I still need a donor chassi of the right wheel configuration. Rokuhan makes a few chassis in Z where you add your own body. Has anyone heard of something similar of British N?
