Lima railcar

Hello

I sold what I thought to be a Lima Railcar on Ebay. The buyer has now come back stating that it is not a Lima and the model is out of proprtion to his other N gauge models.

Before I give a refund , can anyone confirm the comments. Attached is a photo (I hope) sent to me

The on in the background could be a Lima railcar, the one in the front looks like a Minitrix


The RBe 4/4 from Swiss railways (SBB) exists also from Arnold and Piko, but this one looks a bit crud which would be typical for the old Limas. Does it have its wheels set to 9mm gauge?
The coupling looks to be a standard Rapido that's had the hook part cut off.

Lima's tape-measure was somewhat elastic resulting in coaches that were too small and locos that were too large. I suspect this is the case here.

The original Lima version of the Swiss railcar was a bit large.  Can you post some more photos of it? And show the underside with the mechanism and any markings?  We'll soon know for sure what it is, but it does look like the old Lima model.

Found it on ebay I think?  Yes that is definitely 100% the old  Lima model. It should be marked on the underside in the middle, small mouldings either side of the flat circle.

The buyer probably expected the newer Lima Minitrain version – well, I guess he should have done his homework then.
I wouldn't accept a complaint as it is a Lima N gauge railcar – no misdescription here.

Very many thanks. It's difficult to believe that the Lima model represents N gauge. Luckily I have all the engines that I now need, so hopefully I won't get caught again.

Ah but it is 9mm gauge so it is N gauge, it's just that the scale is a bit off especially compared to Continental 1:160 scale    Unfortunately it was a common thing with old Lima, just look at their British N models eg. the class 31 and worse still the class 55 Deltic - which was absolutely huge in order to get their standard power bogie under the front bonnet.

Just one of the reasons modellers these days are usually advised not to bother with cheap old Lima locos.

It is a Lima model. It is narrow gauge,  TT that ran on N gauge track. I bought on about 30 years ago to use the bogies on a EMU that I was building. They resembled the later BR bogies in use at the time.

First announced in Lima and Wrenn 1967 catalogues though pictured having HO/TT/HOe style loop couplings (same as many early Lima N models)

spurweite-n.de  reckons it was actually produced a couple of years later and with Rapido couplings from the start, as borne out by the 1969 catalogue which shows the actual model. Notice how "stumpy" and overscale it turned out compared to the original proposal.

The german railcar is a small railcar from the 30ies. The wiss railcar is rather big and very potent. It is also used to haul heavy ballast trains!

My ignorance, when I bought it I was told it was TT narrow gauge. I did not know anything about Swiss railways. I only wanted the motor bogie. I have  :sorrysign:still got somewhere in my scrap box.

To clarify - this is indeed a 1st generation Lima model of the Swiss RBe4/4. No problem at all with your sale. As has already been said, putting it against a compact sized German railbus is unhelpful.

The Lima Swiss railcar is not accurately to scale, but like other 1st generation Lima, several features - i.e. the 'heavy set' moulding, the mounting on the chassis and the cumbersome chassis design - make it look even more out of scale.

However, in fact a fair few 1st generation Lima bodies aren't so far off. For example the French BB67000 despite being tooled in the 1960s, can be put on a current Minitrix chassis and the resulting combination isn't far off to scale.

Does anyone have the dimesions of the actual  railcar so I can check the descrepancy. If I read it correctly,according to wikipedia, the length was 23,700.

According to my database entry (link above) its length is 140mm which corresponds to 22400 in 1:1.

The length is too short, but slightly too high and wide.
