Can anyone advise on the type of couplers that these coaches use? Specifically, these are the white roofed ones which can also be found in the current Castle Pullman set.

From photos, it looks like they might be the older spring type rather than NEM pockets?

Yes, correct, these were one of the last to use spring pockets.
