I have had a modeller in the NGS contact me as he wishes to run a permanently coupled rake of wagons (Dogfish and Shark, as it happens) with functioning three link couplings between the wagons.

Does anyone have any ideas how he can best achieve this. I did rather glibly think he might join the 2mm society, but he was not put off by my humour.

I know Revolution makes rather nice NEM replacement couplings for a permanently coupled rake of modern wagons, but does anyone do anything like this for older stock?

Iron wire for just the third link (the loose end), non-magnnetic wire for the other links and a small electromagnetic probe for manipulating it to hook it on or off?

Probably easier than trying to replicate a traditional shunter's pole worked from the side over a buffer stock.

Most 2mm Fine Scale modellers shy away from working three links - at scale size they're too fiddly to use practically. Make them useable and they end up with the coupling gap between wagons being bigger than when using Rapidos. The coupling hook on the buffer beam would also need replacing with something you can use.

For fixed rakes the new Revolution screw link would work well. Dogfish are normally fitted with instanter three link couplings (middle link can switch between long and short link). The Revolution screw link wouldn't look out of place. The big problem would be having to fit NEM pocket - I don't think the Dapol Dogfish have they as standard so the factory fitted coupling pockets would need cutting off and replacing with either the Dapol or Peco conversion kits.

Hi Steven
The new batch of Dogfish will have NEM couplings, so this is not a bad solution.

Schiffer-Design offers a magnetic screw-link style coupling and hook in HO, TT and N.  No experience of them.  Probably just as fiddly as the 2mm Society 3-links.
