Does anybody remember who used to make 2 BIl or 3 car DEMUs. I bought some second hand many years ago and would like to add some more units to my model of Eastbourne

Hi Mick

2-BIL
Probably these are either AyJay models resin models or Worsley Works brass scratch aid models.
The Worsley models would be better in my view as the quality of the resin models left a lot to be desired.
Neither should be considered to be a kit like an Airfix kit. These need a lot of fettling and care over choice of chassis to make them respectable.

DEMU
Presumably you are referring to the Class 205 3H Hampshire Units and Class 207 3D East Sussex/Oxted Units?
These are most likely to be BH Enterprises brass overlays onto BH Enterprises bodies, with whitemetal cab ends and coach ends.
They may also be Worsley Works brass sides. Again with quite a few choices of chassis.
These could be easier to put together than the 2-BIL but require a good degree of modelling skill.

EDIT: As far as I am aware, AyJay is no longer suppling the N gauge market, and Ray of BH Enterprises is currently unwell and is not answering emails.
But there are many other ways to build up these models. Worsley Works will do the DEMU sides and possibly even the BIL sides. Our @Mr Sprue has been developing a 3H DEMU cab in resin, IIRC.

Hope that helps for starters.

Thank you very much for the info. I think you are right about the degree of difficulty on the 2BIL units - the person who built mine obviously did not find it easy

That DEMU coach roof looks like it is part of a Minitrix Mk 1 coach.
The nose end is separate - possibly whitemetal.
The sides look brass. Could be Worsley or BHE. Worsley's 3H Hampshire units are actually Berkshire units - 1129 to 1133 IIRC. You can tell by the layout of compartments in the DMBS.

Currently the most readily available chassis is the Farish 158/170 chassis, which has to be shortened. I've done this many times and it is a very reliable and heavy split frame DC chassis.
The bogie pivot points are adjustable. The scariest thing is shortening the plastic drive shafts - you have to use a rubber sleeve to hold the two parts together.
Bernard Taylor of TPM  @BernardTPM used to produce a brass chassis that used donor parts (motor, bogies, TPM driveshafts) from Bachmann Spectrum F7 diesels. This is no longer available.
Other Japanese chassis are available but their bogie wheel spacings are not the same as UK 8'6 BR1 type power bogies.
I have used Greenmax chassis with 8' bogie wheel centres very happily under a couple of Bullied Tin Hal kits, and Worsley 4-SUB kit, but that was more by luck than judgement, NGS SR 8' bogies are also great for the trailer inside bogies (bogies with EMU pickups are mostly 8'6" wheel centres).

I'm afraid building locos and amending chassis are not my forte. I prefer scratch building buildings. If you know of any SR units for sale I would be very interested

As Bob G has said at the moment Ray of B H E Is not very well and apart from that he still hasnt got the plastic injection moulding machine going so it will beva while before he is able to do much in the way of E M U or D M U kits  ,he has got a newer moulding machine but even once he is fit again he will need someone the help get the old one out and the newer one installed as its very heavy and needs an expert to wire it up and plumb it in .
So I would just watch for further postings on here as to progress .
