N Gauge Journal Arrived

My N Gauge Journal arrived yesterday and flicking through it I came across a very good article complete with photographs written by Alex Crawford about his layout.

There is some very good information, not least on point motors for the Peco 3 way point (not that I have any).

Mine arrived yesterday and is still wrapped!    SWMIBO's orders, she says I can save it, alone with my other two railway mags, for next week when we're on holiday up on Exmoor. I have to say she is good to me, she even found a new book on Cornish railways whilst in the library the other day. Some thing else I'm not allowed to read until next week.

So I'm looking forward to a good read with a nice bottle (or two) of Pinot Noir,

Oops - typo, but having said that, sometimes an "I" is needed.

Yep, I spotted that but unfortunatelly American stuff doesn't really float my boat. But I did happen to notice the pics and was quite surprised by the huge size of the flanges on those small wheels and the rapido couplings. I thought Amercian stuff was state-of-art and in advance of British stuff with finer wheels and micro-trains couplers. Obviously not.

Some of the older American stock was notorious for its old "pizza cutter" wheelsets, fortunately they run fine on code 80.  Modern stock is much more refined although some producers have still not switched to knuckle couplers  Modern Bachmann Spectrum, Atlas & Kato USA stock is very good and smaller producers like Red Caboose & Intermountain produce some excellent RTR models

Hi H,

It depends on the manufacturer of US outline, like every other manufacturer I suppose. Atlas and Micro-Trains are among the best and have better quality wheels and generally come with knuckle couplers, although some Atlas still have rapidos. At least half of my US rolling stock is Bachmann and they do have various styles of wheels and are mostly fitted with rapido couplers, so I make do with what I've got.

Once I'm happy with the layout I'll gradually replace the wheels and couplers, but there not that important at the moment. I ahve more important things to spend my money on at the moment.
